Loud screeching noise

Featured Replies

Has anyone else had this problem? Went over small traffic bump - a loud screeching noise started from left rear wheel. Has continued to do this for some miles now. Noise gets less as speed increases, and almost non-existent when going completely straight. Disc appears clear and caliper not hot. As currently in the South of France -might need to call Skoda Assist out. Does anyone have any experience of this?

Is it the disc shield (the metal plate mounted behind the brake disc) in contact with the disc itself? If so, bend it away from the point of contact.

Possibly picked up a small stone. Seems to be a common complaint.

I'd say that is it, look between the disc and the shield, and do it soon or you will score the disc to death, also check the tyre for "foreign" objects.

I had the same problem myself. It made a terrible screeching noise. It stopped after I reversed into a parking space and like Superbia said I think it was a stone stuck between the shield and the Disk.

I had the same as well...driving to work started making the noise...same wheel as well...made more of a rattle when reversing. Called the RAC as it's a company car rather than risk damaging it further.

Guy turned up and knew exactly what it was...common to all Skodas, Audis, VW's and Seats.

Jacked the car up, spun the wheel. Located a small stone that was trapped between the guard and the disc...pushed the guard away to allow the stone to fall out and it was fixed.

Just a flawed design...he did also say that it can be quite often dislodged when reversing.

Thanks for the replies. Yes it was a small stone stuck between the disc and the shroud which came out with a bit of bending of the shroud and some reversing. Seems like a bit of a design fault to me, and the noise is so disproportionate to the problem! Might be useful information to other owners.

Didn't need to call them, but has anyone used the Skoda assist in France - does it work well?

Mine did this for the 2nd time on Friday, the most horrendous loud screeching noise.

If it has stopped does it still need the stone removing or will it have dislodged itself? Local dealer is having a look tomorrow.

This problem is not common to Skoda (VW) cars, it was also common on BL cars (Metro, Maestro etc) and I recently experienced it on my classic Triumph Spitfire. It could be more to do with the quality of road dressing these days!

Happened me one morning but the screeching seemed to get louder the faster I went..Then it just stopped as soon as I'd dropped my wife off to work...Very strange indeed
