Removal of Engine Cover for Spark Plug Change

Featured Replies

Hi ,

I've got a 06 Petrol VRS Octavia its done 35,000 miles . I've just had the cam belt and water pump done and was looking at Changing the Plugs . As I understand it they are Platinum and the stealers after taking £450.00 from me wanted to charge £80.00 just for the plugs (No Labour) .

I feel like having a go myself has anyone done it themselves . What plugs are required does anyone know the part codes and how much they should be . How do you get the engine cover off . They haven't done a Haynes manual yet have they ?? :smirk:

Cheers

I don't know about the spark plugs but if the engine cover is like that on the TDI then you just have to pull the cover up off the front mounts, they just pop onto rubber blocks and then you slide it off the rear mounts.

Engine cover just pulls off. Just pull firmly but don't yank. They are held on by 4 rubber bungs.

With regards the plugs as long as you have a spark plug removal tool it would be a straight forward process taking about 30-45 mins.

Take off engine cover, disconnect Coil Pack loom, remove coil packs and then remove plugs. To fit all back together it's the reverse.

I use NGK iridium plugs in my 2007 vRS not sure on price but would expect around £35.

Halfrauds might do plugs but if I were you I would either source the NGK ones or just buy the part from the dealer and fit them yourself if your confident enough. £80 is expensiclve though. I'd ring a few diff garages. Try VW, Seat and Audi aswell as they all use the same TFSi engine.

Its an easy enough job. Just take your time. Put a smidgen of copper grease on the thread of each new plug and DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN (there should be tightening instructions on the box).

The vRS takes long-life plugs (e.g. NGK Iridiums, Denso etc - there are various possibilities). If NGK then use BKR6EIX - they are about £7 each. Try www.sparkplugs.co.uk if you can't find them locally.

Once you get the part number try e-bay, got a set of NGK iridium plugs for £25 for the yaris.

Well had a nosy today and pulled the front of the engine cover off its two rubber bungs . Do I have to disonnect it from the front airtake that is screwed on . I don't mind that but there is a large pipe at the rea of the engine cover which looks attatched . Will this need to come off . Has anyone got any photo instuctions . Kind Regards Dave

If it is the same as the diesel version you should be able to pull it off the two front bungs then one at the rear, if you look closely you may find that one at the rear which looks attached to the air pipe has a two pronged fork like arrangement which just pulls off the air intake trunking.
