I love those E39 M5's, much, much nicer than the later ones and still look really good today

A friend bought one new a few years back and it was utterly awesome - race car one minute, relaxed cruiser the next.

Only surprising thing was after 3 years how much money it lost and it wasn't high mileage or scruffy - not what you'd expect from a desirable BMW.

Yesterday, I heard the worst case of piston slap I've heard in years. I traced it back to source, and found an E39 (not M5) on the far end of it!

Cracking car that. My mate has one and it spends most of its' time in a nice warm garage and only comes out on sunny days. He drives round in a beat up Polo most of the time. He also has a smile on his face, but that's a different story......

Yes, it's got a 6-CD changer in the boot, along with the CD navigation unit. The phone is properly retro though

I would guess power delivery is very torquey and smooth from that big 5 litre V8, get it de-restricted and it'll probably be hitting 185mph no problem!

I know it isn't very important but I like getting reasonable economy even out of the big engined stuff. I've had V8/V12 saloon cars before that would do 23/26mpg on a run and these are auto boxes, but an M5 with a manual box, is nearing 30mpg on a run possible?

Yes, the torque is baby smooth and it just pulls and pulls, no matter what speed you're doing. I loved my IHI vRS, but this is in a different league.

I've only driven it 'enthusiastically' so far, so can't comment on MPG yet. It's shocking though
