Oil Change

Featured Replies

Doing one tomorrow, where abouts is the filter & housing located? (Rather than me having to look and work out, easier if i'm told)

Also, do I NEED to replace the sump plug if i'm doing an oil change?

Unless the sump plug has been tightened up too much in the past I doubt you will need to replace that, just a washer will suffice. Make sure to tighten it up to the specified torque when replacing and not more.

The other method of changing oil is to use a pump. You put a tube down the dipstick hole and the pump creates a vacuum which sucks out the oil. You really need to have the oil nice and hot though, otherwise it takes ages. Here's one such pump http://www.screwfix.com/prods/21663/Van-Car-Accessories/Mechanics-Tools/Laser-Fluid-Extractor

open bonnet, removed plastic engine cover. pulls up at front and then slides of the rubber at back. oil filter housing at the front just to the right, black top cant miss it really. cant remember wot size socket you need to use, about 27mm i think. replace paper filter and replace the o-ring seal on housing top. wont need to replace the sump plug. just to be sure u can change the sump plug washer but will be fine not replacing if its ok. your call on that :) always helps if oil is nice and hot before draining. remember to use the proper oil,

have fun :)

Take the engine cover off, by giving a good tug upwards. The filter is at the front of the engine with a hexagon nut type thing on top, next to the dip stick.

It's from this thread. Skoda Fabia vRS oil filter But he at first undid it from the bottom and got it wrong.

Thanks. Thought i'd seen the filter housing already butt not looked under the hood for a while now.

Dropping oil > pumping it out, oldskool ftw

Probably makes me sound like i've never done an oil change before creating this thread lol, probably done 20+ in my time and i'm only 19 haha.

Thanks for the info :)

Oil filter top is a huge socket - It is 32mm from memory. I got a specific one for the job. Might even be 36mm.

When I do my oil change myself (so far been at my mates garage each time its been needed :D) I will be warming the car up, sticking the front wheels on my ramps to get the oil sloshing to the back of the engine where the sump plug is - undo sump plug and drain off all oil into an empty oil container. Re-use sump plug (mine is quite new) and ensure tighened to the right torque (will consult guide/s nearer the time) - Remove oil filter and dispose. Insert new oil filter and rubber seal and tighten up filter housing cap. Then pour in approx 4 1/4 litres of new oil, start car and drive off the ramps back on to level ground. Check oil levels on dipstick and top up to be around top end of marker.

Due to my extra mocal oil cooler I was wondering whether I should drain that off too, but I don't imagine it contains much, so not going to bother.

Require 32m/m six-sided only socket for plastic filter cap.

Require 19m/m six-sided only socket for metal oil sump bolt.

Why six-sided sockets, a hexagon type socket tends to damage cap and bolt edges unnecessarily.

Note -- Plastic filter cap when being removed will tend to draw oil filter out with it, (thats a good thing), just be ready to drop them into container to save spillage.

Oil drain plug torque is 30 Nm.

Oil filter holder cap torque is 25 Nm.

Fill new filter with oil - it's also easier to put the new oil in through the filter housing than through the filler.

When emptying note that there are quite deep 'cups' at inside of filter housing which hold a fair bit of old oil.

If using a vacuum extractor check that you have removed the correct amount of oil - it is easy to get the tube in the wrong place for full extraction.

If you remember your geometry, a Hexagon has six sides, so do you mean 12 point sockets. If so which one do you use, 6 or 12 point sockets?

I think he means use full face drive sockets. Many standard sockets only drive on the corners of the nut and kill the plastic oil filter cap.

Impact wrench sockets are full face sockets - so is the special socket available for the oil filter housing cap.

They are deffinately 6 sided that you need.
