AWX Engine Questions

Featured Replies

Hi All, new to this forum so be gentle on me if i have made any mistakes.

I have the chance to become the owner of a Superb 130 PD tdi with a AWX engine for less than the cost of a bag of chips!.

The reason being the previous owner had oil light on so stopped car and went to source oil, put more oil in and car a non start. Car towed to safe spot and left to rot.

That's all i know about it... so my questions are.

As 185k, i suspect oil pump , how easy to get to pump when engine in situ?

Want to check oil pressure with gauge, the oil in it is well manky so want to put new filter and prior to this test, will non pd oil do for oil pressure check, as don't want to throw £35 oil at dead engine.

What Haynes manual is best for AWX engine?

What other engine codes will fit the superb as need to broaden my search, most of the AWX engines are sold bare and at 185k probably need bits like turbo and pump.

Any advise on this AWX engine and any problems it has would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

I use HAYNES Manual no 4279 which covers the passat from Dec 2000 to May2005, If the oil is not going to be in long i would use the cheapest 5/30 oil i could get hold of.

You can get oe oil from TPS for £20 ish

Many thanks for the advice, is TPS a trade supplier, as when i go on the local website, there's a questionnaire about your company details.

Does anybody know about oil light problems on the awx engine, as read on-line that the strainer in the sump can cause problems.

As i have said have not got the car to my garage yet, and just looking for advice on a likely plan of attack when i do, Users on this site seem to be well informed as to where to go looking for the likely problems.

I don't know what oil light was on, are there 2 (1 level and 1 pressure) or is it a single one that illuminates different colours?

Heard also that there is a bonnet sensor that can cause problems with the oil level warning, any ideas?.

Would be good if it was some electric gremlin with warning lights and the non start, as opposed to an oil pressure failure and the likely pain in the wallet that's coming.

Hi

TPS is the trade leg of VAG, so it sells genuine parts. I've never had a problem buying from them, I always get the feeling it's an 'ask no questions' sort of arrangement. I just tell them what I want and they have never questioned it. It's well worth it to make genuine parts more affordable.

I'm not sure about the oil issues, although I have heard people saying the PD engine suffers from sludge in the sump so it's a good idea to keep on top of regular oil changes and always drain the oil from the sump rather than pumping it from the dipstick tube.

There's just the one oil light which lights up orange or red depending on what it's telling you. Off the top of my head I'm not sure which colour is which but it says in the hand book. If you're missing the hand book then let me know and I'll look it up for you.

I'm not aware of a bonnet sensor, other than the switch in the catch. I think my first plan of action would be to get the car scanned to see if any fault codes have been stored. If you don't have access to a scanner then have a look in the diagnostics forum on here where there is a list of members who are willing to help.

Good luck,
