GPS Speed Camera Detectors

Featured Replies

My trusty old Mk1 Talex full fat has bitten the dust, the display has packed in and my subscription has expired. I always found it useful and am looking for a replacement, as it has saved my bacon a couple of times, especially in area's where speed limit's changed or mobile camera's where about.

First off, PLEASE do not reply with use the speedo etc etc as has happened in older threads on this subject, I am after first hand advice / recommendations please. In the Prius I have a Head Up display for the speedo and navigation so have that covered, I just want to know where the camera's are when on unfamiliar territory :)

The criteria I would like to meet are ....

Visual Display and indicators, including GPS Speedo

Good / Proven Database

Fag packet size or smaller

£100 ish cost

I really liked my old Talex unit, but am not a fan of Adam Blair, and have been reading on other forums and tests that the Novus database can be out of date by as much as 5 months at a time.

So, Fire away please......

I have a micro go mate , works fine , small and discreet, , i bought my sister an indic8tor for christmas last year , that seems ok as well and its around the 20 quid mark now on the bay , just sits on the dashtop , on any distance , then the speed camera on my tomtom does the job.

I have a Road angel Professional with add on Laser detector. Nice piece of kit, it updates itself Via an on board Sim card and can receive Text messages. If the unit is turned on it can be used for tracking purposes.

I use the database from PocketGPSWorld.com, this is updated weekly and I believe runs on most Sat Navs. Depending on the unit used various levels of visual and audio alerts can be set.

£100 is pushing it for a decent unit, particularly as some systems have annual subscription fees which come to half that.

Prior to picking up my Scout last week I was using an Origin B2 which I really liked. It is getting long in the tooth now so I won't be transferring and hardwiring it into the Scout. The successor to the B2 (the Pogo Alert) is shortly being superceded by a new model which I will look at when it is released. If it's any good and I can find a decent location in the car for it I'll go with it otherwise I'll just stick with my current, albeit inferior, solution of the PocketGPSWorld database (which is very comprehensive) on my TomTom.

My suggestion would be to check out the PocketGPSWorld database and see if they have a database for your satnav/mobile/PDA. The database is very comprehensive with speed limits and directional information for each camera site. How that data is displayed and used is then down to the device that is being used.

Well, I have taken a punt on Novus, I bagged a new Novus GPS Rider from the local Triumph dealer, in a clearance sale, £35 for the unit (Retail is £95) and free lifetime database subscription. Let's see how accurate the Database is, as a while back it was the best out there, I wonder if they are keeping on top of it.

I have a cable coming from a Toyota supplier in the US, I should be able to stick the PocketGPSworld DB onto my factory nav system then and get the POI / Warning in the Head Up Display :)
