Can a dodgy MAF lose you 20bhp?

Featured Replies

Had my Fabia rr'd and was down 20bhp on what i expected?

was supposed to be anywhere between 220-230bhp but only run 200bhp....

sometimes feels lumpy on acceleration and as if its holding back? like it has a misfire at times?

would this possibly be my problem?

yes it can

also depend on who did the map in the first place and there claimed output as there rollers might be on the high side lol

so when you go to a rr that gives you a proper figure lol this is all you will get lol

DYNO LOTTERY

yes it is a dyno lottery :/

going to take it where i know the rollers are accurate-ish

well its running 1.8 bar i believe so should be running right :/

anyone know what bar a stage 2 turbo dynamics can run at?

Almost certainly, yes it *could*.

My Diesel Berlingo (Don't laugh) was well down on power when I managed to stab one the platinum bits in my MAF with a screwdriver and break it (I said don't laugh!). However, disconnecting the MAF completely gave a marked increase in power (Go figure).

hmmm well a new maf is 60 odd quid...

tuning company says theres no way the rr figures i've got are accurate

there going to vag com it on wed to check for fault codes

map seems a lot cleaner than i thought so im thinking its maybe a bit mild for the hardware :/

Get someone with vagcom to ensure it is the MAF before you waste cash on one. Could be other reasons too such as boost leak, etc

Edit: Just read the above - sounds like best way forward.

PS: DId you mod this car, or buy it with TD stage2?

Unplug and see if it runs?

I come from a Rover background, and the Bosch ones went bang all the time. They control the fuelling pre turbo, then the MAP sensor takes over.

They're crap though, and we used to switch to Piebugh MAFs.......Is there such a thing for PD lumps?

Also lumpy running? Check fuel filter.

So glad I'll be running with no MAF at all soon. :D

buy it stage 2!

there is no boost leaks i assure you ;)

well it was running lumpy and the maf wasnt plugged in the best i dont think, so i sprayed the contacts with contact electrical cleaner, then used two cable ties so its now held in tight, going to unplug battery hoping this sorts the fault codes, then get it vag com'd wed!!

also might get the boost tweaked!!

its at 1.8 bar at the minute, surely 1.9 wont kill it :o

The limit of TD stage 2 is about 1.8 bar to be honest. It's what my Allard VT2 ran at comfortably. (same turbo essentially, an uprated VNT17)

So, whose car was it? Anyone on here?

PS: GTB2260vk - limit about 2.5 bar :p

nah not a Brisky car :)

someone's with too much money i assume, all the better for me though :D

surely theres other variables that can be tweaked though

peak power was 200 bhp at 3950 rpm

peak torque was 267lb-ft at 3850 rpm

want it higher :(

get a st3...

267lb/ft is only about 35 lb/ft over stock, so something was a bit odd. Very low torque even for a 200bhp read-out.

Yeah i know but my peak torque wasnt low down like say 2k rpm it was high up at 3850rpm so at those revs it isnt too shabby! Car was mapped to have no initial torque spike just have bhp so it wouldnt kill the clutch! If the stats are right i cant see why not the an oem clutch can run 200bhp+ :o

How old is it? I'm prob wrong but could this specific symptom be the BLT stutter?

05 plate ASZ engine code, running a 60mm custom egr delete :D

Nothing to do with stutter then ;):D

You're never running a standard clutch? I had to have mine changed within a week after a stage 1 Revo map!

No but im saying with 200 bhp and that torque figure it COULD be possible to run oem clutch

oem rated to 300 lb/ft I think, so yes, you could. :D

Hope you find out the issues. The fact that all your power is coming in the top-end of the rev range further strengthens my suspicion the MAF is faulty. It usually starts with a crappy lower rev range and eventually will just spread, making it all crappy. :D

Airflow on MAF was the wrong way round!!

other than that i have a sweet motor :D

back to its best

Hang on! "wrong way round" - Do you mean the sensor was in the housing back to front? Whoops! haha! :giggle:

I have no idea but the lad assured me it was back to front, also checked boost pressure! 1.9bar of boost :o
