interesting capture on in-car video

Featured Replies

I've installed permanent in-car video in my new Octy vRS using a new system imported from the states - the camera has a handy 2 inch screen built in right on the back - so it's all totally neat. The system starts/stops recording automatically with power, and maintains a rolling set of 15 minute video segments depending on memory card size (up to 32Gb)..

I hope you'll agree it looks very neat if you are into that kind of thing..

Now have a look at this mad cyclist I happened upon on a 2am night drive at the weekend! :-)

I doubt they felt anything when they met the lamp post ;)

Thats cool mate , wonder if you could get an insurance discount , i think it operates in the states

Did you get him on the way back?

never thought of that - maybe I should call them... (after all, I'm with IAM surety - already doing a discount for IAM members) :)

haha - as you can see I thought better of reversing back to him as visibility wasn't great and he may have moved into my path.. . (as it happens he was getting up and heading off in the opposite direction into the darkness)...

Lots more info please..prices/fitting/link etc..well impressed

Maybe get a few bob off police camera action as well , or you've been framed , help with the costs. i was stopped at red lights once when the cheshire speed camera van drove past me with the policeman driving on his mobile phone , wish i had that then , did my head that.

haha - yeah - guaranteed to catch plenty of muppetry - i do quite a lot a miles.. :-) Of course, for some strange reason quite a lot of cars slow down when they see my white octy estate with a video camera and hi-viz jacket... no idea why that is :-)

So is he still bound and gagged in the boot of the car?

What make is the camera and where can you purchase from?

If its this one;

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DASH-CAM-CAR-DASHBOARD-VIDEO-CAMERA-DVR-MINI-RECORDER-/200470880859?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eacfee25b

then is pretty expensive. if you can live without the little monitor (which lets face it is only of use when aiming the damn thing!) there are other cheaper untis available from ebay for around £40 with auto power on/off and write to SD card.

You;re right - it is expensive (sorry, can't check that link right now, but will post the details of my camera later in the week..) - but actually that little screen, in my experience, makes all the difference. Aiming the camera is indeed one part of it - if you want the best picture composition, you kinda need to be able to aim it :-) plus, you might wish for a passenger to re-aim while driving if circumstances dictate.

the other benefit is ability to replay while out and about.

the other benefit is to be able to program/re-configure the device while out and about

the other benefit is to confirm it is actually working

the screen may also have a deterrent effect to drivers behind you who are a little keen on joining you on the back seat.

All of these are things that have affected my usage in the past and thus directed my decision making..

I've tried MANY MANY options over the years, using 20 quid bullet cams, wireless spy cams, card recorders, mini video/sports cameras etc. If you can live with these and the limitations they have, then by all means do if they are cheaper.

But without doubt, this is the best system for me - professional looking, great performance. You pays yer money, you takes yer choice :-)

How did you power it as the cig lighter is live all the time??

How did you power it as the cig lighter is live all the time??

who mentioned the cig lighter? :-)

I'll get a description of this kit up at the weekend - crikey, I should have waited to post :-) questions questions ;-)

actually for the time being I have four power sockets mounted under my sear, driven by a switched output from the cig lighter - again, I'll give pics later.

This is just a holding pattern for now until I have time to do a proper job - which will be a 12v socket in the dash box to power the tomtom and 12v power from somewhere else (e.g. mirror/rain sensor), or possibly also from the dash/fusebox to power the camera... it has a long power cable - enough to go from where it is mounted on the window, along the ceiling, down the pillar to the floor and over to underneath my seat - so switch power from the fuse box, which is passes, ought to be no problem :-)

I have a video from tonight also :-)

Mr.nik. I am very interested in your in-car camera. What is the camera's model number? Is it GV6300 or GV6330? I have read descriptions about the camera very closely and there are no lines saying that the camera can operate at a pitch black night. As most of time I drive at night on the back roads of countryside, the night vision function is very important to me. However judging by the video footage you supplied, it seems that the camera works fine at night. Can you give me more information about this? Thanks. Here is the link about the camera: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/308684763/Multi_Functions_Vehicle_Car_DVR_Motion.html

This is the camera I ordered here

I'll need to fish out the box/paperwork to see exactly what model it is. It doesn't have true "night vision" - but as you saw from my video, the xenon lights are enough to give a reasonable view of the driver's own view at night..

I found a similar gadget here.

is a review, and here is a instruction manual.

Cheers,

d.
