overboosting fault - MIL on constantly

Featured Replies

Hi guys, im sorry if this ground has been tread previously, im sure it has, so i appologise for not looking through previous threads hard enough

I have a 2002 90bhp 1.9tdi, it has the sticky vane problem, boost hard and it will revert to limp home mode, switch ignition on and off again and problem gone (until you boot it again) also the managment light is constantly on, im a technician by trade, admittedly i have been hands off for approx 6 years, so im not really up to speed with the diag side of things, im going to pull the turbo off this week, and try and clean it, it only has 80K under its belt, but my query is with the MIL been on, i was thinking of buying an OBD lead for the laptop, and wondered if any one had any advice on which one to get, is the 2002 model OBD or OBD2??

also as a side point, this morning, i booted the car (not litterely) although i was tempted, and it seemed to drop on to 3 cylinders, belching clouds of smoke out, i cycled the ignition several times before it started behaving, this iam worried about as the MOT is due in June, and the smoke test will be fun

The cheap way is to have a look in the diagnostics forum and see if there is anyone near you with VCDS, or buy a cheap cable from ebay or someone like gendan and use the new free "lite" version of VCDS that you can download from Ross Tech. Your car is K line rather than CAN-BUS and it is OBD2.

From experience the srticky turbo vanes problem doesn't normally cause any lights to come on though. Also are you sure that your car has a VNT turbo? Not all of the 90bhp TDIs did.

Also this thread would be better in the Octavia I forum.
