Tax disc location

Featured Replies

Hello,

according to this: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10021514

Basically says its ok to stick it 'anywhere' on the passenger side so long as its not in the wiper area and obscures view.

IMO, most cars putting it on bottom left does obscures view to an extent. why is it not a standard thing to put it on the top left corner instead? or stretching the rule slightly why not put it above the rear view mirror..?

Lastly, is it ok to stick it behind the tint at the top? :wonder: since it can still be visible.

They need to readily see reg number and bar code, bottom left is more accessible

Yes I see your point, but does it make much difference if it was at the top corner as opposed to bottom? Im saying this because as a driver you would want most vision as possible, having the tax disc on the bottom would obscure vision albeit not much tbh but I would have thought maximising the vision is 1st priority?

I got told off for mine being wonky once!

...but it was by a fellow Briskodian, so that doesn't count! :D

Argh......... Wonky tax disc REALLY annoys me  !

Out of habit i just put mines in the bottom left corner but not tight into the plastics at the side or the dash as i like to be able to clean round about it lol

The tax disc must be legible (clear enough to read) from the nearside of the vehicle without having to touch or lean on the vehicle.

Amongst other things it means that if road dirt obscures the disc, they don't have to wipe the dirt off to see if it is valid. I know this because a co-worker got a £200 fine for failing to display. He had put the tax disc on the top left of the windscreen. The dirt obscured it because it was outside the arc of the wiper.

Which is interesting, because technically it's not supposed to be in the area covered by the wiper... My work car park pass is in the top left of the screen anyway emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Not sure about that.

Nothing must obscure the swept area in front of the driver. I would say the normal tax disc position is NOT in front of the driver.

Never thought of the tax disc location until my co-worker got fined. The normal position makes sense as it is as far out of the driver's line of sight as possible but it is always visible as the glass in front gets wiped.

Very true, but it is still within the wipe area (well on the fabia anyway).

Strange as it may sound I take the corner vision of the windscreen quite important, whereas middle of the windscreen I can sacrifice for some strange reason (phone holder for gps). I think I move my head around quite a bit when I drive so I can compensate the vision (moving left or right) when its in the middle, whereas if it was on the edges I cannot..

If you get my drift.. :S

Following on from that, I really dont understand how people stick GPS etc on the edge of driver side window (e.g. taxi's) ! I tried it once and I cant see jack on the RHS

Er i think that was me, not a telling off as such just wondering if you were sober when you installed it :giggle:

Attention to detail is important! And you managed to get your sunstrip straight ;)

I got my tax disk just above my rear view mirror, keeps it out of the way for me and a clean view ahead :)

do you have a tint on the window above the mirror? Do you think wardens mind not seeing the colour of the tax disc? :wonder:

nah there's no tint strip on the windscreen, it was because I did have a aluminium tax disc holder, then it kept rolling off the screen during winter. so I popped it up behind the mirror now. (just the actual tax disk its wedged against the screen with a mascot that sits on my mirror i have in the car)

From the DVLA link

Your vehicle tax disc must be displayed on the passenger side (kerb side) of the vehicle’s windscreen. If there’s no windscreen or you have a motorcycle or sidecar' date=' you should display the tax disc on the kerb side of the vehicle.[/quote']

So top or bottom should be acceptable. Can't think I've eever had an issue with it compromising vision in the bottom left corner :D

Here in the Channel Islands we don't have tax discs any more, but we have to display an insurance "disc", which isn't a disc at all but, in it's holder, is a rectangle about 3 times the size of a tax disc. Virtually everyone has it on the bottom left corner of the screen and it can't be moved as it's stuck with strong adhesive. I've never heard anyone complain about it compromising vision and, personally I don't even notice that it's there.

As a practical point, a tax disc In the bottom left corner might just obscure a toddler who's about 16m from the car, and roughly level with the front bumper. Any closer and their head will start to appear "over" the disc.

This is a storm in a teapot, over a tax disc. Stick it where everyone else does or do you want to be "Different" or "Special"

:dull: I AM already special in many ways ( ) but in this case I just want to be a tad more practical without being on the other side of the law.

Please don't take offence but just because the majority has done it one way doesn't mean its always right. If there is no beneficial reasoning on placing it there (WRT the driver) I see no reason for it to be there.
