Crash bar modded....what do you think

Featured Replies

Took my front bumper off today to check if any pipes etc were rubbing since I fitted a Pro Alloy fmic a couple of weeks ago.....all was OK.

But while the bumper was off I decided to mod the crash bar to uncover a bit more of the IC core.

This is the before pic.

I also modded the redundant O/S smic intake to look like the blanc N/S one ( maybe a bit OTT :giggle: ) here's a pic.....sqashed bugs an all.

Quite happy with the way the crash bar turned out.....just hope it has'nt lost too much of its original strength.

What do you think ????

Cheers fella's

On Jabba's web site it says that no (crash bar) cutting is required and when I fitted the fmic I just went along with that.

But ever since Gerry (Berretta) commented about the crash bar covering most of the IC core :'( .....it set off a niggling doupt in my mind and after a few days thought I decided I was unhappy to leave it as it was and something had to be done....thanks Gerry ;)

This is about as far as I dare go with the crash bar, due to the fact that the car is used as a family car, but if it was just me that used it, then I prob would have got a bit more extreme with the gas axe.

I don't know, I always have issues about cutting something that has been designed to give structural integrity.

i was expecting to see another crashed octavia, i wouldnt of touched a crash bar myself though in all honesty but its your car and your safety, so it'll be your problem if you crash it and a weakened crash bar causes additional damage or injuries,

i would be tempted to remove it again and fit a steel tube or box section in behind it and weld it and brace it over to regain and improve factory strength..looks great though mate!

similarly if you make it too strong then you would cause additional damage or injury, if you remade the bar witht the same proporties strength weakeness and characteristics in the event of a crash it would be fine.

If you have a crash in a lowered octavia the crash bar doesn't do a lot anyway, ask Clive :giggle:

That'll have more to do with what you hit, and the attitude the car was in at the time than "was the bumper bar an inch lower than standard?" I think.

Yes you are all totally correct re the safety implications of modifiying the crash bar and I accept your comments 100%

However, when I did the mod, I tried very hard to maintain the crash bars strengh and all the metal that was cut out was MIG welded back in.

The metal that was cut out was a strip approx 1" x 20" (goes between the two top IC mounting bolts) and maked in yellow below.

This metal was then re-welded to the inside of the crash bar along with a couple of fillets of additional steel plate.

IMO the purpose of the metal in this area of the crash bar is to try and limit any buckling effect the crash bar may sufer in the event of an impact.

And to this extent I think I have maintained its original strengh.....but TBH I hope I never find out.

Would I recommend anyone else do it......Errrrm no, yes.....I mean NO :)
