Hot, but not this hot

So what lies are your MaxiDots telling you? This is mine

Guessing the temp probe is either misreading or the surrounding area has been sat in direct sunlight and it's an anomaly.

Either that or your instrument cluster needs recoding. Then again perhaps it's just optimistic for a good summer?

Calibrated by the same guy who did the fuel consumption algorithm - completely useless.

I'd willingly swap the whole trip computer gimmick for a decent analogue clock, readable by everyone in the vehicle and which keeps good time - all the time. The VAG instrumentation is rubbish.

I came across the same thing as this when recoding my instrument cluster. As standard it uses a stepped linear function when displaying certain values. The same applies to the engine temp gauge. So basically if the temp is between 70 and 110 the needle will point dead centre on the temp gauge instead of showing the real temperature. MPG works on the same principle apparently, so the mile to empty feature is always a little off too. With some calculations it can be recalibrated.

If im honest, it had been sat in the sun a while :p. It dropped to about 24 after couple mins.

Thats interesting about the temp needle though, always wondered why it sat dead in centre (or it does when its working on my car)

i believe the temp gauge trick is used on purpose to stop people bringing cars in worried that they arent warm enough or are getting too hot. im sure i got told somewhere that ford made their gauges climb to the middle faster than the engine actually got warm because people started being worried about how long it was taking to get to temperature.

it does no harm, as long as youre alerted that its actually getting too hot then just having it point dead center whilst in a comfortable range is ok.

That's precisely why they do it and no it's not a problem. I only came across the issue when doing something else. A few people were whining about the "mile to empty" and MPG readings not being accurate too ... can't say I'm all too bothered about it. My MPG may be 8-10% off but who cares. It's really only there to give an indication anyhow.
