ABS and Traction light on

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

New girlie to this site and need some help - hope I'm posting in the right place!!!!

My ABS and traction light have come on in my Octavia 1.9TDi Lauren & Klement - the ASR OFF light is also on and wont switch off, I'm assuming this is because the other two are on?

I haven't noticed anything different with the performance of my vehicle, but wondered if anyone can give me an idea of what this maybe? I have asked my guy to take it to be put on a diagnostic computer but any ideas I would be eternally grateful.

I have only had the car 2months, should I take it back to the garage? I also have a MillionCare lifetime warrenty on it, which I purchased when I got the car, would that be cover, being as its only 2 months in my hands?

Thanks in advance

Hi, This happened to my 2006 VRs earlier in the year and the bad news was that the ABS module had an internal failure! My car was 3-4 out of warranty. Skoda UK agreed to cover 50% of the cost which was circa 1500 so I had no option! This seems to be a common failure across the VW range as it's a common part. If you have a warranty then you've won a watch. Get it fixed and count your blessings. ps Complain to Skoda as they deny this is a problem!

Best of luck.

It will come up as G201 fault code your Teves 60 pressure switch in your abs is knackered , thank god you have warranty , explained here huge thread but worth reading , been there done that , got the t shirt! http://briskoda.net/...n-esp-problems/

Right well my garage guy put my car on the diagnostic machine and it was a problem with the rear offside abs sensor - having looked at it he said the wire was corroded and replaced it!!! however the lights are still on so its believed to be a sensor issue, for which my man tell me that is costly - how much am i going to be paying for that!!!!!! my garage man says that you have to do the sensor and hub together as they come as one unit???????// don't ask me I'm a girl!!!! any help of what I'm looking at would help please!!! x

Before you let him do anymore work on your car, get in touch with your warranty company and check it is covered / get authority from them to do the work. If its not covered then it may be worth taking it back to the dealer you bought it from and see what they will do. As others have said, its the Teves ABS unit which has failed, which as I understand has the ESP sensor incorporated within it. The thread linked to earlier has all the info you need. Just keep your fingers crossed you don't end up paying for this yourself - you'll be looking at a very hefty bill (at least £800 perhaps at lot more).

Do you think its worth going back to where we got it from, we have only had it 2 months, or will they try to get out of it - it also needs two new tyres!!!!! NIGHTMARE DAY!! I thought the problem was with the ESP versions not ASR or am I getting my lines crossed!!! if it were this unit would it not show up as a fault on all the sensors not just one?

Edited by PhoenixB

They will probably try and get out of it as there is no way of knowing when these units will fail. I'd have thought the warranty company should be your first port of call - if they turn you down then try the dealer you bought it from, armed with as much info as you can find regarding the Sale of Goods Act.

My wife had similar sounding problem on her car last winter, after skidding on Ice. Hers cleared by 'testing' the ABS when safe to do so. EG flooring the brakes to invoke ABS. This cleared the problem.

Most garages I've bought cars from have given me at the minimum 3 months warranty, personally I would take it back to them and get them to sort the problem.

Well I have spoken to the Office of Fair Trading, they have told me that as I have a loan with Santander which is a Conditional Sale Agreement, that I should call them and tell them the problem and that they have breached the contract by selling a car of unsatisfactory condition!!! and back that up with a recorded delivery letter too, I have phoned the warrenty company - I'm not covered.

I have just called the car place and they told me that they were with someone and would call me back...........yeah righto, the hell you will

Name and shame if they don't !!!

PhoenixB....

ASR is a component of ESP. I'm not clear if your car is fitted with ESP or not. If it is, then it could be a Teeves 60 problem. If not its probably got a Teeves 70 unit instead and will be OK. So you are correct with some of the things you say in your earlier posts.

A dealer with the appropriate electronic diagnostic tools will be able to tell you what Teeves unit you have. Also is the fault code a G201 sensor or not? If it is then its the ABS unit and messing around with the wires to a wheel sensor is unlikely to take you anywhere.

On what grounds does the warranty company reject your claim?

Where did you buy the car and what warranty did they provide - and when? If the warranty company claims it is a "pre existing fault" then you should go back to the dealer and inform them that they sold you a vehicle with a pre-exsiting fault (in writing).

This ABS problem with Golf V platforms is a well known and expensive issue but if all else fails there may now a cheaper fix to this problem - refer to the other threads about this and look for a company called "ecu testing". I've no experience of them personally but they may be the solution.

Well my warrenty is from a company called Millioncare, they told me that had I of wanted abs cover I could have taken an extra component that would have covered that - obviously I didn't!!! The garage have been ok, I am taking it the their guy who they use for all their work and he is going to put it on his computer and tell me whats going on - he then said that he would sort out the problem for me - I have to say that I think that it is probably just a dodgy sensor and will be fixed relatively easily - if its not then as the Office of Fair Trading said, my contract is a conditional sale contract which mean I can go back to them and say that the car was sold in an unsatisfactory condition - fingers crossed!!!!

I dont know what the fault code was, but will find out today from their guy , I have to say my garage was going on about needing a new sensor and hub as they are unable to be brought separately - which sounds like a croc to me!!!!

Ok so took the car to the dealer "man who does" he put the car on the computer and it came up with a rear left abs sensor failure (g46) or code 00290 - I think!!!!

he is going to replace the sensor on that side and then hopefully (she says fingers crossed!!!) that should sort it!!!! thank god it wasnt the other thing!!!

Glad to hear you are sorted.

However, if you do have a Teeves 60 ABS I think you may need to consider your future warranty arrangements. Unfortunately failure of these units is relatively common.

Do you suggest I cancel the warrenty - it would appear that its not worth the £200 we paid (according to the garage man too) if we can I don't evn know if we can !!! just glad its sorting itself. Just got to wait for pay day to get it sorted and cycle to work in the mean time!!!! DOH!!!

As I understand it. If your car is a pre 08-09 (AFAIK maybe even 2010) and has an ESP button, it will have the Teves MK60, its a matter of when, not if.

Im stil trying to get mine sorted, the garage has been giving me the run-around because I wanted them to go for the recon unit mentioned in the other thread.

My warranty company is waiting on the garage before anything can go ahead...

Thats on the side I replaced at christmas about £45-£50 for the part.

Simple job to do and its not a integral part of the hub.

There was slight damage to the end of the sensor when i removed mine, all i can imagine is that a stone managed to pass between the rear of the disc/hub.

My warrenty doesnt cover abs, warrenty company told me that if i had wanted that covered it was additional???? So I have no chance of getting them to do that, me thinks!!!!

Thanks Browny, they have quoted me £51 plus vat, not sure where to go with this Teves thing - should i get it sorted now or just wait for it to happen if it does???? all very confusing

Rhoobarb - my car doesn't have an esp button - it has an asr button???? same thing??

If this is a problem for me in the future, where do i even start to go with regard to getting some help with this obvious common fault on this car? I have read lots of posts on this subject where Skoda has agreed to stump up some of the cost but where do you start with that, who do you write to, contact etc?

As I understand it from the other thread;

ASR is the MK70 module

ESP is the MK60 module

The MK60 is the one that has had problems.

One less thing to worry about ;)

No worries matey, its a case of jacking up the car, removing the wheel. Then the connector and one bolt, use a large flat blade screwdriver to push the sensor out from behind the disc.

I tried pulling the old one out from the back of the hub, and ended up snapping the old sensor.
