Annoying issue with new Tv and Sky

Featured Replies

I'm sure other folks have seen this and know about it, but I hadn't!

I bought a shiny new Sony 32 " LCD a week or two ago, and it's excellent.

After a few days, I noticed that the sound was out of sync with the picture when watching through the sky+ box, and pushing the sound through the Pioneer surround system.

Googling shows that it's a known issue; a flat panel TV needs a finite time to build the picture, and the delay in building the picture causes the issue. If you use the TV speakers, the TV puts a delay in the sound to compensate, but the surround system just takes the sound from the Sky+box and pumps it out.

The Sky+ box manual mentions that there's a setting in the box to compensate for this, but it appears, according to Sky support, that it was deleted in the last software update, although it exists on the Sky HD box.

My Surround system is too old to have a setting to compensate, so I can't fix it that way. There are some external delay boxes that can be added, but I don't really want to splash out £75 to £150 on another bit of kit.

Anyone else encountered this issue? Anyone found a good fix? (Apart from a new surround system, or paying for Sky HD)

Thanks, Phil

dont pay for Sky HD, just Go and get a HD box, spend 2 hours on the phone arguing you have a box and just want it to work (dont want HD channels, just the sound option) and when you do want Sky HD then they just need to change your contract :)

You must be a lot more patient than me. I couldn't be bothered with that.

Phone sky, ask them where the option went and point out that since sky is now useless to you they either fix it with a HD box FOC (you don't need the channels), a software update that puts the delay in, or you can cancel.

Be prepared to leave sky though if they say ok then.

Hmmm. I always quail at the thought of phoning Sky. Apart from one memorable occasion, when I spoke to somebody technically knowledgeable, English speaking and helpful, I find it soul destroying and time wasting, to say the least.

And, if they call my bluff, I'm screwed. Poor aerial reception here, and no cable. bu99er.

After working on customer service for over 5 years.... just a little.

Be very prepared! get cable in your area? :giggle:

Brain fart!

RTFM of the TV, some of the older modles have a dely setting on them, or sound settings and say 'surroud sound'

im guessing you are using optical out from the sky box? try doing this from the TV. - Plug the Tv into the Surround sound kit. this way anything plugged into the TV will come out the surround.... xbox, ps3, PC, sky, DVD, Blueray, Freeview. all on 1 cable instead of 7,0000 cables

Manual has been read, all 119 pages of it. I'm probably one of the few people in the world that actually does this (or so it seems, from the posts you see on this and other forums asking questions that could be answered by RTFM)

Problem with using the TV sound output, while it does work, is that you're adding another layer of processing to the sound, which is never a good thing.

No but I do get freeview/freesat and don't care about sky that much that they can take me for a ride, remove a useful feature, which some would say is a cynical attempt to try and get people to upgrade to HD and still be willing to bend over and pay for it.

You are going to have to add another layer of processing to sort the sound out anyway nomatter which way it goes, extra box/Sky HD box will add this extra layer/through TV, it will all do the same to the signal just in different ways.

TBH are you going to notice the dfference in sound quality? that cable is proberly crossing over/running parrallel with at leat 2 Power cables, and unless sheilded properly or layed out properly this will kill signal (sound) quality.

Then theres the Speakers...... you say it is a nice old SSkit, so they speakers are aged how long? and are proberly plasic cones and the rubber ageing have dried out a little so theres loss in sound, are you running BiWire setup or bellwire to the speakers?

Long and the short of it wont it be so much easyer to plug it into the TV?

I had a similar issue (pic/sound out of sync).

I ended up just putting the TV into external speaker mode and cabling the L&R channels from the TV to the AV System. Tis obviously only 2ch. but is all in sync.

FWIW the Sony might have an SPDIF out (optical), try using that instead of the one on the Sky box.

I always thought though that the delay was the AV system decoding the digital audio rather than the TV creating the picture. My AV system can inject a delay, but that was counter to what I perceived my problem to be, I needed a picture delay.

Most TV's only output 2ch. PCM on SPDIF, I understand that Sony's may output 5.1. But I never tested it.

It doesn't really matter about the mains cables, as I'm using optical. :)

I can see what you're saying, and yes, it's easier to do it physically, and I'm sure my speakers aren't perfect (or ever have been) but I'm pedantic enough to want to route everything via the amp rather than via the TV. I think it's a techie thing.

I may have a word with Sky after I've taken a Valium or two..........

Thanks for the input, folks.....

Phil

You could buy a really long optical cable. 150,000 Km should do the trick for half a second delay ;)

There is always FreeSat.

Dont have an issue with mine. Am using optical link. Do you have that option?

Yep. Optical from Sky + to amp. Does the same if I use Analogue. though.

Phil

Does your TV have to be set to optical only?

I remember I had issues initially on my Samsung, and had to force the optical only option.

Just buy a plasma :giggle: :giggle:

Panasonic G10B with built in Freesat HD

Your amp may well have an option to introduce a sound delay on the incoming signal so check there as well. I need to put a delay on my HD box to get the sound in sync.

Alternatively why not take the sound output from the TV and feed that into the amp as both sound and picture will be in sync then. Your TV may have either a lineout or optical out on it, connect that to the amp instead of the sky box and your sorted.

Hi, Manny,

My amp is from the mists of time (well, 2006), so has no delay setting

I've settled on using the optical out from the TV for now, which does get things in sync.

I spoke to Sky about it, who denied that the setting was ever on the Sky box, swore that it wasn't mentioned in the manual, then claimed their systems were down and they couldn't do anything when I asked to speak to someone about cancelling my contract..

About par for the course where Sky are concerned, then.

Phone them back and have the convo again, I know people who have just left sky for freeview/freesat HD because of similar issues of uselessness.

Funnily enough, I texted a mate who's contracting for Sky's IT department at the moment, telling him their IT systems are rubbish. He came back with "if there's any issues. nobody's told us. Incident queue is empty" Which confirms a lot of what I'd thought was true.....

Theres a bit about out of sync sound in the back of the sky+ handbook and how to fix it...couldnt tell what it says though!!!

See my original post. It's in the book, but the feature no longer exists on the box.
