1.9 TDI Engine differences

Featured Replies

Forgive me if this is going over old ground, but i've done a search to no avail.

Looking at gettin an Octy, and have noticed that there are at least 3 different bhp figures for the 1.9 TDI (est 85, 110, 130)

Why?

Also is it just an inlet restriction, ie: is it just a case of gettin a 130 inlet manifold to make a 110 a 130?

Majorly confused :S

Octavia 1 or 2 ?,As far as I know in the Octavia 2 the 1.9 developed 105 bhp,130 from the 2.0 litre,don't know how much the Octavia 1,1.9 produces,being a different,older design of engine i guess it had slightly less ....

All the 1.9 (actually 1896 cc )engines different in major ways.

67 bhp (2 versions) are non-turbo

85- 88 (2 versions but called 90 bhp) are turbo (? variable vane)

110 bhp is turbo with variable vanes and a popular engine in VAG

130 bhp is the PD engine and has direct injection from the camshaft onto the individual injectors. Also has turbo.

As far as I know the differences between the engines is so large that it is not economic to consider making one from another. This is particularly true for the 130 bhp engine.

The 110 engine can be remapped to give more torque and power.

Octy 1

1.9litre engine

SDI = 67bhp

TDI = 90bhp (some have VNT and others standard turbos)

TDI = 110bhp (VNT)

TDI = 130bhp (PD, VNT)

TDI = ??

Octy 2

I think these are based on a 2.0litre PD engine?

I think they are actually

SDI = 67bhp

TDI = 90bhp (some have VNT and others standard turbos)

TDI = 110bhp (VNT)

TDI = 130bhp (PD, VNT)

TDI = 150/160bhp (PD, VNT)

The turbo's are different on most models.

A TDI 90 can have it's injectors changed to those from a TDI 110, and this is an easy way to increase the power without a remap.

Obviously the fuel consumption figures will then be wrong (well more wrong) due to extra fuel going in per injection cycle.

You can also fit some larger injectors into the 90 or 110 to give more than that.

As above the 115/130/150/160bhp versions of the engines are all PD engines and particularly different to previous ones.

In an Octy MK I you got the TDI90 except in the elegance and L&K which had the 110bhp engine.

Towards the end (53 plate IIRC) you could get the 130 PD engine, in the Elegance and L&K and a few ambiente SE models.

Octy II

1.9 PD 105bhp and is TDI

2.0 PD 140bhp and is TDI

2.0 PD 170bhp and was only vRS

2.0 CR 170bhp and is only vRS

2.0 CR 140bhp, should be in most models but not reached here yet although you can now order it.

Thank you all very much. Thats the info i was after. Looking at getting an Octy 1 L&K 110bhp, so in the future it seams a remap to 130bhp would be the easiest solution. Thanks again.

Yep, I was wrong :(

I'll fix my post so as not to cause later confusion!

Just in case you missed it, the 110PS engine is different from the 130PS engine as the latter is a PD and the former isn't.

Another difference between these two, in the L&K at least, is that the less powerful engine has a 5-speed gearbox but the 130PS has a 6-speed gearbox. We tried both and didn't like the larger gap between 1st and 2nd on the 110PS version.

To throw another one into the bag....

The Octavia Tour (Mk1 Octavia) which is available to buy new all over Europe, comes with a 1.9 TDi PD engine producing 100bhp (101 PS).

So many variants it's baffling! It makes the 1.8 20vT variants look simple!
