How difficult is a DIY wheel refurb & recolour?

Featured Replies

I have a set of quite corroded 16" Spiders in my shed that nobody seems to want to buy.

I feel it'd be a horrible waste if i leave them in there feeling sorry for themselves so with (hopefully) nice weather of the summer around the corner I could DIY refurb them and change their colour possibly using them everyday or just keeping them for special track day occasions.

It sounds simple - but is it?

I pikey DIY refurbed the insides of them with silver hammerite and a brush to try to stop the corrosion before i ran them on my car for 6 months (then bought a better set) and while I was happy with the finish for the inside of a wheel it'd look dreadful if i did the face in that way.

I'm assuming they'd need stripping right back before priming and spraying but does this need a chemical of some sort of would a damn good sanding suffice?

Then once they are prepped to a satisfactory level is it a case of primer, 2 or 3 coats of the lucky colour of choice, and then clear coat, then wax?

Anybody advice (even if the advice is don't freaking bother!) would be appreciated

I looked into this, and I also had a thought about your wheels.. lol

From what I've read on numerous threads/web pages etc etc. it looks really tedious and time consuming! If you have a spare set of wheels its little more manageable..

If your looking at purely money saving POV its not worth it imo.. lol save £150 for a good weekends (or two) work! I'd rather spend a couple of weekends working p/t and pay for someone to do my wheels properly.

But! if you like that sorta thing and have a great sense of achievement over it by all means go for it. :)

The Spiders i have at the moment are in good condition so i don't HAVE to do anything with these ones.

It was more just a project to make use of them and possibly fit them to the car if I can get them to look good enough in a half decent colour B)

If they don't look any better I haven't lost anything except time and a small outlay for materials as they'd still be sold as "in need of refurb" - you;d just be refurbing my dodgy work rather than the effects of nature! lol

I was tempted to attack them with the Hammerite Smooth Green that i have left over from my brake calipers but there is no way in hell that the other half would commute in a red car with green wheels!! :D

they have now sold so no need to worry about any of the above :)
