loose feeling from car

Featured Replies

Just wondering if I should simply accept its what fabias do regardless of mods....

Was going excessively up "the crazy mile" as it is known around here - dual carriageway which is quite bendy compared to most, but can be done very quickly if you straight line across lanes through corners when quiet. Trouble is, I took one corner which still needed a degree of turn, and the car felt quite odd.... and anything but stable.

If it helps, I have also noticed lately I can turn the steering wheel from side to side whilst going straight before anything truly happens to the cars direction.... I am thinking it could be bushes somewhere - maybe top mounts? Already have cupra rear facing bushes. Have a feeling some other bushes need replacing soon. - ARB maybe? That could explain the rather lurching/unstable feel I experienced.

PS: Mongrel is awesome still! (in a straight line....) I didn't realise how fast I was going until that bend :D in hindsight I would have backed off a bit first, but the crazy mile got to me.

What tires front and back are you running and pressures?

Did it feel like it turned into the corner, then a little bit tigher without any more steering input?

Kev

Steering slack is usually caused by one of two things. 1: Play in steering rack or worn track rod end ball joints. 2: Worn suspension strut bearings at top, or worn wishbone bushes. If this has started all of a sudden a full front end check is in order ASAP. Worn ARB or drop links will cause lurching, but not excessive steering play.

Also worth checking the bottom universal joint on the steering column - this can also cause excessive play with the steering wheel.

Tyre pressures are around 32psi all round, Toyo T1R with good tread still.

The lurch kind of felt like the car wanted to go understeer a bit - The left side kind of dipped a little and then the back end went a bit wayward.

I do have a slow weep/leak in the steering rack - I need to top-up the PAS reservoir once every 6 to 8 months and due to it being such a slow loss, have not looked into a replacement rack. Might do a cursory check of the bushes today whilst the car is in the air at the garage, but #1 priority is the turbo.

I've had a customer complain of similar steering feeling after we changed their tires to T1R's, something about the tread blocks moving under cornering...

Although sounds like you've had the tires on there a while and the feeling of lurching has suddenly shown?
