Running in a petrol engine?

Featured Replies

As a few of you know i have a Fabia 1.2fl. Ive not had a petrol car in a long time (except a 1.2 twingo gt which i didnt keep long). How long do these things take to run in? Will the mpg steadily rise as it does a few more miles?

Ben

Not too sure but I would have thought the modern petrol engine will be much the same as a diesel engine, drive it like you normally would i.e. don't just pussyfoot around because it is new and as the components inside the engine wear to match each other and give the optimal interface then your mpg and performance should improve. Don't expect an overnight thing though, it will probably take quite a few thousand miles.

It can take 1-2k to wear any tightness off. Just drive normally, that's how I've always done it. I just avoid red-lining or labouring it for the first 1k. You should notice the mpg will improve over the next few thousand miles. I think you're doing well on that already TBH :)

On a run today (well 18 miles - thats a run for a car that normally does 3 miles a day) which was nearly all motorway it averaged mid 50's.

That's excellent! What speeds were you maintaining on the motorway?

That was with the cruse set to about 75mph or so. Mixture of up and down hill bits.
