TDi 110 - 5 speeds or 6?

Featured Replies

I'm sure that the 110 bhp demo that I tried had 5 gears but the UK web site says 6 and the latest brochure says 5 for the 2wd and 6 for the 4wd.

Any ideas? is this is 2011 change that has sneaked in?

My brand new 2WD 110 has 5 speeds. Seems the right gearing for the engine and with pretty good torque and 49.1mpg averaged I'm happy.

I am expecting my 110 bhp 2wd car to have 5 gears when it arrives hopefully in a week or so from the lease company.

I would be interested to know why all the other vehicles get a 6 speed box though, unless its only the 6 speed that can mate to a four wheel drive system?

Personally I am not bothered as my cars have had 5 speed box's for years, and I am used to this. Had a 6 speed BMW for a week whilst my car was repaired from someone running into the back of it!, but kept forgetting the 6th gear was there and hardly ever used it when off fast roads. (By the way this was the only time I have driven a Beemer, a newish 230 diesel estate from memory, and I just didn't get the mass appeal of it, heavy steering, bumpy ride, too low driving position, a clutch Superman would have complained about, etc, just hated it and grateful to get my Mark 1 Superb back. As for build quality the boot lid wouldn't open!, I had to put things in through the glass window that also opened in the rear door.)

No changes with 110 CRD. Always has been 5 speed for the 2wd and 6 speed for the 4wd.

There are one two 'contradictions' that have been spotted between website and brochure. Brochure tends to be the correct version in most circumstances.
