Where should I power my satnav from?

Featured Replies

I have a garmin unit with a TMC cable.

In my current 407, I have a 4 way extender whcih runs from the rear passenger seat footwell lighter socket, as this leaves my front socket wire free (I dont smoke, it just looks nice)

one the Octavia, the only socket I can see is by the gear stick, and I really dont want a cable vivible from there.

Speaking to the dealer this morning, he said that they might be able to do something, although they will not spend hours on it.

I am happy for the socket lead to be cut off if need be as I have spare cables, but I was just wondering if anybody had any ideas so that I can prompt them.

I have seen a couple of people run their satnav in the centre of the screen and drop the cable down through the little cubby hole on the dashboard, but I prefer mine on the right of the driver.

Look forward to peoples commenets.

Just drop a wire down the side of the dash into the fusebox. 10 minutes work at the most.

Does you Satnav use the socket on the lead to drop the voltage from 12v to 5v? Mine does, so I bought a cig lighter socket from a local accesoory shop (£4) and installed it all behind the fusebox. now I just have a small wire coming up from the side of the dash, its almost invisible when the unit is fitted and connected. No wires now needing to be trailed over the gearstick!

I bought a socket the other day. Bought it from Halfords. They do not have them on show, but they use them for their own fit stuff, so he chagred me £1.99.

If they fit that, then that would alow me to have a 4 socket as well so that I can use the phone charger.

Does that mean the fusebox is by the steering wheel??

Yes the fusebox is at the end of the dash (drivers side), access it from the panel on the end thats covered when the drivers door is closed.

Not sure if its relevant or helps - but i use one of these

and something like

http://cgi.ebay.co.u...274c7c4ffb12c52

piggy back fuse on 12v fuse in side fuse box (need a 1amp fuse), power wire to this, then connect earth to one of the chassis screws near the fuse box and voila!

run wire discreetly behind dash down and plug in

works for me

On my estate I run a 5M maplin USB to mini USB (for my TomTom) cable from power socket in 'boot' & it pops out by the pillar on drivers side of dash. Easily hidden under the carpet-door trims etc. I plug this into a 90 degree USB adapter so looks very neat. 10 minute job. The only drawback is that the socket is not switched, but it is not a problem...

You could install a power outlet in the storage compartment on top of the dash if you want? Not sure if that's what your pref would be, but there's a thread here that gives details if you're interested

Depends where the socket ends, there won't be room for a multi way extender in the area where the fuses are, I have wired my Sat Nav in there (see this link) and it's tightish, (there's no way my 3 way extension would fit in there with chargers as well) so should be do-able for you as you'll just need to bring the wire up to the right of the dash instead of getting it to the centre console

I just plug the phone charger into the socket by the gearstick

thanks for all the advise.

It is a shame that I did not look when I was at the dealer.

With regards to the USB connection, the Garmin units do not charge that way so it would have to be a cigaretter socket.

Just been told my car is going to be build week 30 so still have ages before I get it sorted.

Some of the newer Garmin units do work from the mini usb into the cradle. Guessing yours isn't one of those...

I did exactly the same. I'd never done any car electrics before, but I am quite handy at that sort of thing. It took me around an hour in total, mostly because I took it slow not having done this type of job before. I suspect those that are doing this type of thing all the time could easily get it done in 10 mins - it's really not difficult

I like Dodgy's solution and will prob get that done to mine, but as its down for build week 31 not exactly in a rush to organise it. :(
