Felicia Crash

Featured Replies

I've only had it since March and I've already flipped it :( Handbrake turn on a wet field, wheels dug in and bam, flip.

Here in Guernsey we don't have an MOT, so I'd like your advice to whether it's worth repairing or not, I'm not claiming on insurance as it'll go sky high next year.

Most of the damage is on the roof above the windscreen (which smashed, and has been removed).

The main structure seems alright, it's just the dents on the roof.

The left hand doors shut fine, as do the right but on the right both of them have gaps at the top, the B pillars both seem straight too. But the windows can be really stiff to undo and do back up.

Is it worth getting the top dents bashed out, then repainted, and then replacing the windscreen, or not?

Thanks!

Working from your description, I think you may have bent the top screen rail, RH A-post and window frames. Is there any way you can borrow a new windscreen to offer up against the hole and see if it'll fit or not? I think the car's otherwise safe to drive (but maybe not to roll again).

TBH, I would say that shouldn't be repaired. An insurer would take one look and write it off due to the roof and pillar damage.

Whoops.

From what you've said you've bent the roof over to one side - it might look straight, but that doesn't mean much. Door tops can be bent over easily enough, do you mean both sides are hard to wind the windows?

I wouldn't have thought it was worth repairing "properly", probably more than the car is worth. If you can just whack a screen in it and bend the door tops to where they need to be, fair enough, but if the roof really has moved to one side then it's not going to be straightforward as the screen won't fit anyway. Give it a go...

Thanks for your replies, guys!

I bought the car for only £375, so is it worth even getting a new windscreen? I might call up a few places and see how much it would be to replace the windscreen.

Not sure how much a new screen is these days, used to be about £90 from Butt's, piece of cake to fit with a bit of cord. Plenty of secondhand ones about on the mainland, I think your location may make things a bit more tricky!

Also, the airbag didn't go off either, is this unusual?

That's true, but an insurer has to restore the car to the condition it was in before the roll. If the OP is prepared to live with some evidence of ding marks, and the roof isn't bent over it's DIYable to a "decent beater" standard though.

That was my concern too.

Further thought, which doesn't involve borrowing/buying a windscreen first. Measure the diagonals across the screen aperture, and if they're more than 2mm different, suspect the roff will have shifted.

2mm out :( The black seal fits though.

The seal's made of rubber; it would take a lot to stop it seeming to fit without the glass.

I'm not dead sure either way, but it may be that you've been lucky and just bent the window frames.

Now, I would suggest that you and a mate both measure both diagonals about 5 times, then when you've both got 5 readings, compare the lot, ignoring the highest and lowest differences. If the shell's really distorted, the screen won't fit and seal properly, and a big bump might break it.

Oh and to check the chassis easily, make a chalk mark on the ground by dropping down from the centre of each wheel hub, then measure wheelbase both sides, and both diagonals, and compare with the book figures. I don't make enough to voluntarily throw away a few hundred quid, but it's not like I'm asking you to spent money on stuff that might not fix a problem; just a few minutes on proper diagnosics of whether or not there is a non-cosmetic problem.

Also, the airbag didn't go off either, is this unusual?

An airbag is only any use in a frontal impact, and even then only within a certain angle. An impact outside of those conditions won't set it off.

that's a scrapper mate, not worth fixing.

Yep, a panel beater I know has said it's not worth it too. What parts are worth salvaging, and selling on? I can't really take anything big off, as it's too expensive to ship from here.

Throttle body, ECU, immobilliser box and key chips (if you have more than one key, in particular), clocks if they have a rev counter. Not sure what else would be worth it, take a look on eBay what things are going for...
