Rear Lights Wiring Diagram

Featured Replies

Hope someone can help, please

Will be wiring 12n towing socket wiring at the weekend and would be gratefull if someone could either supply a diagram for the rear lights or point me in the direction of one.

Also does anyone know if I need to use a 7 way bypass relay on an Octavia? I've wired 12n electrics on 4 other cars including my Omega which has bulb failure warnings and have so far not needed to use a bypass relay.

Any help would be gratefully received

I did not use a bypass relay when I fitted my towbar electrics and have not had any issues. I wired into the loom under where the CD changer is mounted. I think I consulted my Haynes book of fibberations for which coloured wires did what.... :giggle:

Thanks for that, haven't got a Haynes manual yet, don't pick up the car until this afternoon :smirk:

Have read somewhere that the wiring diagrams are not that good in the Haynes book of lies

I can suss out what wire does what visually and with a meter but would like either a diagram or a list of what colour wire is what in front of me when I do it.

At least I know that you have had no issues without a relay so thanks for letting me know

I'll have a look through the book of fairy tales in a bit and post out the colours you should hopefully need..... You should be able to confirm by checking the light clusters too.

12n socket

1 - Yellow - Left turn

2 - Blue - Fog lights

3 - White - Earth

4 - Green - Right turn

5 - Brown - Right sidelight

6 - Red - Brake lights

7 - Black - Left sidelight

Octy ("typical", from Mr Haynes)

1 - Left turn - Black/White

2 - Fog lights - Grey/White (this for the LH cluster though - which is not wired up, unless Haynes is wrong :giggle:)

3 - Earth - Brown

4 - Right turn - Black/Green

5 - Right sidelight - Grey/Red

6 - Brakes - Red/Orange

7 - Left sidelight - Grey/Black

Many thanks for taking the time to look them up for me, much appreciated

Interesting comment about the fog light wiring, I though mine had foglights on both sides :wonder:

Just got back from picking her up from the garage, thanks to Mad_Mark for the lift, and drove 30 miles home and I must say I'm impressed by the performance, certainly an improvement over the 2.0 TDI Vectra I had a few years ago and I'm afraid to say the 2.2 petrol Omega that I own now :o

Fuel consumpion is unbelievably good, the computer must be lying :giggle:

If you get really stuck post on here and I'll have a proper look at mine. Octy in the UK market should just have a single fog right on the offside of the car, although some people have wired in a second bulb for the nearside. It should have twin reversing lights however.

I would suggest removing the CD changer to gain better access to the loom. Also remember that the water pipe for the rear window is bundled into this loom and has a junction here, so is more than likely to pop apart when you are doing this job. It also pops apart in the winter when the washer jet becomes frozen...

Mine (when she behaves) reported an average of 70mpg between Salisbury and Bournemouth the other evening

Ok thanks again for the offer.

Looks like I'll have to connect to the offside for fog lights then.

I believe I'll have to remove the autochanger to get to the bumper fixings, please correct me if I'm wrong, and I think I might self amalgamate the washer connection while I'm at it, seem to remember reading that somewhere

Your probably right. I removed my changer as changed the HU anyway.

I figured it was best that the "weak" point in the washer system was somewhere easy to get to (rather than say behind the plastic boot trim....

Right - bumper's off, all cleaned up behind and underneath, tow bar is fitted and torqued up, just got to do the bumper cut and run the wiring in through the grommet and bumper can go back on.

What did you use to cut the bumper? Hacksaw?

Seems to be going smoothly so far - cd changer came out ok but can't really see the washer pipe at the moment - must be in the middle of the loom, will have to untape the loom to get at it.

Wiring tomorrow morning for me then, 12n and 12s sockets to wire up

I drilled a hole in the corners (2 of them) and then used a fretsaw (iirc) to do the cutting. Not the worlds neatest job, but no one can see if unless they are under the car.

The washer pipe is wrapped up in the loom tape. Sounds like you are going well.

Nice - thanks for the pics - think I'll do the same with the 2 holes in the corners with a drill and maybe use a jigsaw or junior hacksaw, how did you get the centre of the bumper? Looks awkward to measure with a tape :wonder:

Edit: Just thought, I may just slide the bumper into position and mark where it needs to be cut

I put some masking tape on the bumper and then slide it into place and marked it up. An extra pair of hands to support the bumper is definitely worth while your cutting it.

Yep I'll give that a go - just out of interest, where/how did you run the cables into the rear of the car ?

Did you run the cable down and up under the bumper?

I went in through a rubber grommet rear center, and then took off the inner plastic boot trim around the boot opening and then ran the cable behind that over to the CD changer where I made my connections into the loom...

On the external side, the cable was tie-wrapped to the hefty chunk of metal which the tow ball bolts too, and then under... I'll see if I can find a picture. Nope fail, might take one in the morning.

Thanks again, I have already removed all the trims so everything is exposed

Edit: Ok, 12n is all wired up and working fine, went in through the same grommet, just got to do the 12s sometime.

Ran out of time yesterday as had to go out to a World Cup BBQ and decided to strip the load area and give it a good clean, previous owner must have done a tip run and spilt some dirt as I got a full dust pan from beneath the spare wheel :o

Wiring colours you posted were spot on so thanks again for that

Ok, car is back together just need to get a cable from the passenger footwell through to the engine bay to connect directly to the battery for the 12s relay but can't seen to find a suitable route through the bulkhead.

I can see where the main loom goes through the bulkhead but there doesn't deem to be room alongside it to get through the grommit, any ideas people? :wonder:

Remove the glove box, and next to the pollen filter there is a grommet you can feed the cable through. Ensure you seal this well, as otherwise this can duct water from under the scuttle area into the car (I know from personal experience)

PICT2760.JPG

It is probably easier to thread a wire through from the scuttle panel side and then use it to pull the 12s supply cable back through....

  • Author

Thanks for the pic - I've removed the glovebox already but couldn't see the grommit in your pic - will remove scuttle panel tomorrow and try feeding a cable from the engine pay to use as a pull through

mbames. Your a star. Going t be fitting my dual tow bar this weekend. The info supplied in this thread is very concise. Thank you both.

All done now - got through the grommit no problem - removed the grommit, fed a length of telephone cable through the hole, taped the new cable to it and pulled through into engine bay. Refitted the grommit with silicone sealant and smothered the top and surrounding area also.

Followed existing wiring to battery, running inside the cable tray behind the air cleaner housing. Had to remove the base of the housing to get full access but worth it as a neat and tidy job.

Scuttle panel came off ok once you realise how they unclip from the grip bar which runs beneath the windscreen.

First time towing with the Octi next weekend, can't wait

Many thanks mbames for all your help with this, you've been a great help

I believe you just need to attach a wire from the RHS cluster to the LHS cluster, or break into the loom where the rest of us splice in our 12n towbar wiring.

Pretty sure all the clusters have all the "tracks". You might need to source an additional "pin" for the plugs though, or do it pikey style and solder onto the cluster instead.
