intermittent air conditioning

Featured Replies

Hello all, I own a skoda octavia vrs ll which I have owned for a year. I use my air con once a week to keep it going when not needed but recently it just started blowing warm air. I had it topped up and had it recharged where the garage managed to get the temperature down to 8c. Got back in the car the other day and yet again it has stopped blowing cold air.

The 'auto' button is selected as you do for climate control and I have even checked the fuses to see if that was the problem

I believe the compresser is working fine as when I turn the 'air con' on the revs go up slightly which to me means it has kicked in.

Have any of you on here had the same problem? and if so what had to be done?

Thanks

You say you have selected the "Auto" have you tried to setting it to "cold" (or 16) and does that get it cold ?

other than you saying the engine slightly drops in revs I would say its lost its gas.

I have just has a similar problem (not Skoda) but the Air con company topped up the gas, and could not find a leak, but a week later no cold

so took it back and again no gas, and could not detect a leak(while the machine was connected) but leaked when it was disconnected, it

then twigged the valve in the connector was leaking, so replace the valve and all fine.

I have to set it to 'Lo' to get the air con started and even then it doesn't always work. The revs go up and not down when I turn the air con on. I will take it back to the garage where I had it charged up if it still fails to work as it does sound very familiar.

Today I discovered that the air con is still working, it's the centre console unit that isn't working properly. When I select 'auto' which should turn the air con on, well it doesn't. When I turn the fan dial to maximum this does start the air con and then I adjust the temperature. I don't know why this does it but I'm sure it would no doubt be expensive to repair so I'm just going to live with it.

Hope this is useful to anyone on here who gets the same problem in the future.

Another further to this: It now truns out that the compressor was intermittent as it was packing up and therefore need a new one. This will cost just over £900 inc vat to change it and flush out the air con which is a lot of money. It's a common fault on the 2.0 TFSI engine which was coverered under warranty but mine is a year out of it now. I have contacted Skoda customer services to see if they would do a 'good will' by maybe reducing the costs as this is a known problem. Fingers crossed for now.

Skoda wouldn't pay a penny. Ended up getting it done £300 cheaper at a VW specialist. Got a new compressor, flushed system out and re-gassed. £630!!!

Should have had a new dryer also, did you?

Nice it works though :)

Thanks for the info, mine has been doing exactly the same recently so looks like it's going down the same route... :-( Expensive job that, bugger!

I had a lot of the same symptoms, diagnosed as a failed compressor (Which seemed to be correct) fitted a new compressor (Which I got on ebay for a lot less than the dealers quote: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/ATP-Autoteile__W0QQ_sidZ18116485?_nkw=kompressor+skoda&submit=Search - they'll confirm via email that the compressor is correct for your car). Once I got the compressor fitted and the system regassed, the aircon worked for a couple of weeks and gradually tailed off to not working again.

When I returned it they found that even though the system passed the standard vacuum test it was leaking refrigerant very slowly from the evaporator while pressurised (Evidenced by oil being visible in UV under the clutch footrest and at the heat shield behind the engine where the aircon lines go to the evaporator). The new compressor seems to have stopped working too, so whether it's broken due to contamination issues thanks to the system not being sealed or whether it developed a fault independently isn't clear. I'll have to take an evening to pull the thing apart and see whether it's a labour nightmare to sort out or not.

labour nightmare to sort out

My vote goes here :S Certainly something I wouldn't attempt, hah.
