Leaking sun roof ?

Featured Replies

sorry to resurrect an old thread but I suspect I have a leaking velux now.

The front and rear passenger footwells are soaking and as I had rubber mats down for the winter the water has been underneath them and I hadn't noticed. So I now have mould growing everywhere. It's going to be a week before West End Garage can look at it. So in the meantime I want to ask fellow Velux owners a question to try to pin it down to the sunroof - when you open the roof, there is a pop up wind deflector. On mine this is soaking wet. So the question is, should it be? here seems a bit of a musty smell from there too.

Not good but I am sure West End will get to the bottom of it. 22 years of driving Skodas without problems, I suppose it's my turn for one.:rain:

  • When you go to get it back, would you be willing to ask them where the front drain begins and ends, so that other people can check theirs? I for one would be much obliged.

After all the help you give others, Dom, I hope you get all the help possible from Briskoda members. Good luck.

thanks Freedie. It's booked in to West End Garage next week and they have said they will not mess about, if I've got mouldy carpets then the car will just get a new set of carpets fitted. Good response so far. As I say I have been driving Skodas for 22 years and the worst I have had is a blown bulb and a flat tyre.

Urgh no! Good luck. I better go and check mine as well then............

do you mean "no the wind deflector should not be soaking wet" or "ugh no, I hope mine isn't leaking"?

the former would be very useful to know! Mine has always been wet, I just assumed that was the way it should be

I've never once touched the deflector to be honest........... So can't comment. Have made a note to check this weekend, but suspect it would not have been designed to be wet.

Mine was so wet that it is obvious just from glancing up at it to be honest. I have never raised it before as I assumed it was just the way it was.

Looks like I am going to get new carpets regardless

Thanks on closer inspection the mesh is wet and the channel around the front is soaking too. In fact when you open the sunroof there is a distinctly musty smell

I have seen a report somewhere that they are moving the drain tubes to exit down to the rear wheel arch now to make them drain faster, will try and find it but going out in a min so will look later

Thanks!

Dom, when I had a yeti for a day I too was drawn towards the fabric deflector. I can vouch that that one was bone dry and it was showery the previous day, but not on the day of driving.

If it were me, I'd get my wife's hairdryer on it to ensure it is dry, close the roof and then hose/high pressure wash the room to se if that is where it is getting in.

Cheers. I shall do just that

Very sorry to hear of the trouble, domhnall.

Our Yeti got well soaked today. I've just been out to open the sunroof for a look. The deflector mesh is bone dry. The front channel has two or three drops of water in it, otherwise it too is completely dry. I've looked at the mesh on several previous occasions and it has always been dry.

Hope that helps, even though it may not be much comfort.

By the way, we know where the rear drains exit, and the outlets are easy to check for blockages. But where do the front drains end up?

It's worth getting everything checked properly if you have wet carpets. I had an A4 without sunroof that got all mouldy around the floor area - turns out the air con drain was blocked and the water was going straight into the footwells.

I am sure west end garage will do their usual thorough job. They've already said they will remove and replaced all the carpets due to the mould. The mesh has dried overnight but there is a strip of material on the roof behind it and it is still absolutely sodden. Going to get the hair dryer out tonight, am goingnojt in the camper van today to try to find some sunshine

No sun in Kinross today, but heading out to Broughty Ferry with the aged Aunt for a run to sell her car. At 91 she finally has to give up driving!

Dom, my Runrig friend, all the very best with your roof, leaks, mouldy bits, smelly bits, hassley bits and all that stuff. Your positive attitude and kindly disposition will stand you in good stead.

Keep us informed.

Hi sorry it took me so long to find been working.

this is from another forum again a leaky sunroof and they say that this mod has worked.

The original rubber bungs with the so-called hinged

centers were removed and replaced with blanking plates. The drain was then taken down from the end of the drain channel, through a bigger diameter pipe and out in the rear wheel arches. This arrangement

seems to be as near to the latest design as they can get. So far so good

Cheers, but my car is only 6 months old so I am assuming it is already "the latest design" - or am I mis -reading that post you added?

don't know when this change happened may be worth looking behind the tailgate to see if yours has the rubber bung out lets

Any pictures or more specific details of where to look?

have a look at post 92 page 4 of this thread it shows one of the mods cutting off the flaps

Hmm now I am intrigued. Mine does not appear to have ANY drain holes at the rear. I have been all over it and there is nothing in the hinge area at all other than torx screws.

Surely it's not possible for them to have fitted a sunroof and forgotten the drainange? Or perhaps the newer models (ie after the sunroof was reintroduced) have a different design. Anyone else got a recent one and could have a look for me? I will post pictures later of what mine looks like.

Our car is from 2011 after the reintroduction of the sunroof. I can confirm that it has the drain exits near the tailgate hinges, covered with the rubber grommets with the flap on their lower half.

A pipe, though, can get blocked at its inlet as well as its outlet. What puzzles me is that since the front corners of the sunroof are lower than the rear corners, there must be drain inlets at the front corners. But I can't see them.

I'd expect there to be drain inlets for all four corners of the roof, as it is curved from side to side and front to back. It looks like they are all concealed.
