New Brake Pads - Burning Smell

Featured Replies

Just had the rear pads replaced today on the Silver Slingshot.

Every time i stop now after even a short journey there is a strong burning smell and the rear wheels are hot compared to the front ones (which also had new pads)

Is this normal and will go away after a couple of days or does it mean they bodged something and it could be the handbrake is stuck on slightly or something.

I'm taking it back to the garage in the morning but was wondering if anyone had experienced this before and had any suggestions so i dont make myself look like a tool in the morning

Yep, perfectly normal as far as I know. The bedding-in instructions on the last set I fitted encouraged you to get them extremely hot and to expect a smell and maybe even a bit of smoke if you were doing it right :) It should settle down in a week or so.

Including the wheel getting hot (well fairly warm to touch)???

The discs on mine were really hot when I got to work this morning after a 3 mile journey mainly at crawling speeds - performance is still excellent, so I'm sure they can't be binding

Im talking rears here though.

Wonder if they adjusted the handbrake mechanism so they are always on.

My rears don't get anywhere near as hot as the fronts.

Sounds like the pads are binding. Maybe they did not wind the pistons back into the calipers enough.

Jack the back up and see if the wheel spins. If not they are binding.

Went back this morning and they altered them.

Combination of handbrake cable and piston sticking they said.

All seems ok now
