105 PD 2nd gear problem

Featured Replies

My wife has a late 2007 105 PD manual that has done 13k miles. I hardly use this car as i have a VRS of my own but recently i have been driving it more often and have noticed an issue with 2nd gear that goes something like this.

Shift from 1st to 2nd below 3k rpm in a lazy fashion and it shifts perfectly

Shift from 1st to 2nd at anything around the 4k rpm mark in what i would describe as a slightly more spirited gear change and it crunches at it goes into 2nd almost every time.

My wife has never complained about this problem as she never sees the 3k rpm mark let alone 4 - 4.5k. No idea how long it has been doing this as i very rarely drive the car.

Its under warranty until late september so im going to ask the dealer to take a look but just thought i'd post this to see if anyone has come across a similar problem. All other gear combinations work perfectly be it changing quickly or slowly.

Cheers Folks

Sounds like the syncro on 2nd is a bit weak.

My dad had a similar experience with is PD105 passat, ended up with a new gearbox under warranty

yep, sounds very much like the 2nd gear syncro ring ... had exactly the same thing happen to mine. Let the dealer try to replace the gearbox oil first (this is what they'll try to do), and when that doesn't fix it, insis on the gearbox repair ..... upshot of this extra step is that you'll get better gearbox oil put in which makes the shifts smoother.

4,000 revs in a PD 105bhp diesel in first gear is not in the normal range of driving a diesel . There is little point in going beyond 3,000 revs as the torque at the lower speed will still accelerate the car more than adequately . Does your wife know you rev the boll***cks out of her car ? Unless I'm mistaken is not the engine red-lined at 4,500 revs ?

Seriously though, this may be a gearbox problem, but in normal driving it would not be a problem, but if it's still under warranty then best get it fixed right away before warranty runs out .

I only wish I could be there when you tell the servicing guys it only happens at above 4,000 revs !

I'd agree. I've got the 1.6TDI and 4k in 2nd is excessive, you can achieve max acceleration well below that.

yeah ... i'd just like to point out i've never seen 4000rpm in my skoda ..... there is absolutely no point revving it that high.

Agreed 4k - 4.5k is right at the top of the rev range and i rarely exceed the 3k mark. However my question wasn't how do i get my 105 pd to accelerate as quickly as possible its painfully slow whatever RPM you shift gear at but we didn't buy this car for its performance its a labrador transporter :D

The vehicle should still shift perfectly at 4k or 4.5k even if this is excessive RPM. I'll get it booked in and see what the local dealer thinks.

Cheers for the help guys much appreciated.

I'll let you know what the service guy says when i tell him its at 4k B)

Keep up the good work fellas

Also agree 4K in 1st gear is OTT as i never push that far in mine.

Good luck at the dealer and hope you get it sorted

Same here - I'm not sure mine has ever been over 3000 rpm in any gear. I normally change up at 2000rpm, or 2500rpm if I'm driving enthusiastically.

Good luck getting it sorted - hope it's nothing too serious.

I had this problem and the dealer changed the gearbox oil and that worked for a while.

Then after perusing Briskoda I found a post suggesting a change to a racing standard synthetic gearbox oil: Silkolene SILKTRAN SYN 5 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil. Opie Oils (www.opieoils.co.uk/c-391-silkolene-gear-oil-final-drive-oils-atfs-mtfs.aspx) supplied very promptly and they give discount to Briskoda members.

ANYWAY, it transformed the gearchange on my Octavia II and I'd recommend Octavia owners to change their oil to this grade if only for the improved gearchange feel.

IMPORTANT TIP: Drain old oil. Fill to the filler/level plug with SYN 5, then replace filler/level plug and remove the reversing light switch to add more oil to make the total gearbox oil a MEASURED 1.9 litres. You'll need a small funnel and length of plastic tubing to do this easily.<br>

Big improvement, easy job.
