Brake judder

Featured Replies

My Fabia has developed fairly severe brake judder. Not so much riding around at slow speeds but say 50mph and over. The steering wheel vibrates quite severely and the brakes seemed to loose a bit of feel. But the car does pull up perfectly and straight. Looking at the front discs they appear to have a bit of wear to them and the discs are pitted. So I can only presume the discs are warped so I need new front discs and pads? Am I right?

I'm havin the same problem now mate. Anybody got any answers?

if they only judder when your braking then yes you need new discs...

Yeah thats the first thing I'm going to change, Hopefuly it will disappear. Thanks Warwick hunt.

Don't know if it's any help, but when my parents' car's brake discs went "out of true" (i.e. non-flat surface), the brakes started snatching (almost as thought you were lightly pumping the brake) ...

thats because the uneven disc is pushing your caliper piston back when it hits the disc high spots..

no such thing as warped discs

have a wee read here if you have the time

Warped disc myth

and if you fancy doing it yourself heres a guide

discs and pads replacement guide

Brake rotors are a very important element of a car's braking system. Warped brake rotors, a condition that changes the natural circular shape of brake rotors, present a significant braking hazard. What follows are the most common causes of warped brake rotors.

Excessive Heat

1. Brake rotors that become too hot during normal driving can become warped. Although brake rotors are designed to be very heat-resistant, excessive heat, especially friction-related heat caused by malfunctioning or damaged brake pads, can seriously damage brake rotors.

Physical Damage

2. Brake rotors can become warped if they are hit or smashed in any way. Vehicle fender benders, tire-changing mishaps (where brake rotors can hit the ground) or serious roadside abnormalities can physically dent, break or warp brake rotors and seriously impede their function.

Defective Brake Pads

3. Brake pads are designed to slow and stop a vehicle by using hydraulic force to squeeze against brake rotors and stop or reduce their movement. If brake pads become damaged in any way, especially if they become loose or warped themselves, they can cause brake rotors to become warped and damaged as well.

You win the internet

haway banana...even you know metal distorts wen hot...

The cause of judder on mine was worn pads, even with 8mm. of pad material left they juddered when braking from high speed.

Don't overlook worn bearings, although not such a quick and easy fix as replacing discs and pads. Front wheel bearings do seem to be a bit of a weak point on Fabias.

Mine has exactly the same problem by the sounds of it - pulls up ok but quite a bad judder through the wheel.

Strange thing is it was fine before being parked up for a while over Christmas. The handbrake was seized on when I came to use it but that would be only the drums at the back, right?

So am quite puzzled why the front brakes would have developed a fault

Pads will seize to the discs as well, this can happen over as little as a weekend if say the cars been washed and then not used. Add winter/grit into the mix and leaving your car stood for a week over christmas and you can damage your discs easily, they should scrub back up with use. If you're parking up for an extended period outside then consider leaving the car in gear rather than putting the handbrake on.

Ok, thanks for your advice. So the handbrake operates the front discs as well then? I thought it just held the rear wheels.

As for scrubbing up the discs is this a DIY job with some wet&dry? I'm not sure I could tell whether they could be scrubbed up or need replacing (I'm only a novice!)
