Smoke on cold start up and idle speed

Featured Replies

Sorry for the numerous newb questions but I couldn't find anything definate through the search function.

My Octi smokes on a cold start, a light greyish colour, only for a few seconds and is a bit lumpy on idle for a short while.

Smoking stops once she's idling but is lumpy for a couple of minutes until engine starts to warm up.

She seems to idle at 900 rpm, hot and cold, is this normal as most of my other cars idled at around 750rpm?

Is the lumpyness normal or can I fix this easily by cleaning some engine componants?

Mine's on 97_000, idles a bit lower (maybe 800..850), and is lumpy to the extent of not firing on all 4 when it's cold enough to actually use the glowplugs, but it's usually cleared by the time I can select a gear and drive away.

About the only parts that changing might help are the glowplugs, but have them checked first, and insist on proper Bosch or Beru ones as replacements.

You could always check the MAF (the sensor between the airbox and the turbo) just to eliminate it from enquiries - if it's duff, then it will make no difference if it's connected or not. There should be a warning light on the dash if it's gone, but AIUI, it's not as black-and-white as working / broken, so it's worth a try, I reckon...

Autodata CD2 quotes idle RPM (for smoke test) as 875-950 for the ASV engine..

Thanks, but I didn't think the glow plugs operated above a certain temperature? :wonder:

Ok thanks, so you mean unplug it when it's running to see if there's a difference?

Many thanks, 900 spot on then

Clean out the EGR breather system and it's also worth checking the oil seals in the turbo are in good condition if nothing else works.

Thanks, does that include removing the EGR to clean, if so what's the best way to clean it and the pipework?

If the smoke is grey, then it sounds like the static pump timing maybe out.

If you have access to a registered version (needs to be in basic mode to do the test) of VCDS then you can check this

Yep!

"when it's cold enough to actually use the glowplugs" seemed like a big clue that they don't; the figure of +5C springs to mind, but that could be the temperature that the air conditioner is disabled below.
