Advice needed when lowering VRS with coilovers

Featured Replies

Ok,

Managed to fit the rear coilovers last night, Never got the wheels re-fitted yet so i have no idea how low its gonna be yet. Just a couple of questions i could do with getting answered.............

Do i adjust the ride hight when the wheels etc are all back on? i.e can i just jack up the car and adjust with the C spanner then drop again??

Is there a specific way the bump stop fits in the top of the spring? and how low can i go without cutting the bump stop? (not planning on going lower than 40mm)

Last question... The bolt and plate that goes under the spring, does anyone use anything to lock this in place?? It looks like it'll just fall out after driving a few hundred miles??

Thanks for the help in advance, i'm totally useless at mechanical things and i'm doing it using that golf guide from here

Yes you can adjust the ride height with wheels on, you probably need to jack car up as to get to the coil spring adjusters with the spanner is tough without a car lift.

The bump stop on the rear is attached to the shock, I cut mine by 25mm. The spring should just sit in a rubber mount at the top of the spring. For the spring to sit correctly you need to remove the original spring locator found on the rear wishbone that centralises the rear springs.( looks like a large washer with a lip)

The bolt and end plate should sit nice and flat underneath the spring platfrorm on the wishbone. I think i used some loctite screw lock on mine but not needed.

WOW ok, i never removed that lip!!! And never cut the bump stop. Looks like i'll be removing it all tonight then!! That lip on the spring platform looked like it was totally attached! must just be rust!

I wish i got a mech to do it all now!!

Yeah that little aluminium spring seat shim can be a pain in the ring.

One of mine came off stuck to the spring, the other was stuck fast to the spring seat. Had to tap a thin chisel under it to lever it off. It was so badly corroded I thought it was some old adhesive!

To adjust my rears, I remove the wheels, and remove the lower damper bolt, so the spring platforms and springs can move freely. I found that trying to adjust them while loaded, caused the upper rubber spring mount to twist, and scratched the lower coil on the notched adjustable spring seat. I set the rears to maximum height, with the full thread of the seat engaged on the base. That turned out to be spot on for me, and I've not cut the new bump stops.

The fronts are much easier, and I adjust mine by removing the wheels and adjusting using an allen key, C-spanner and rule. To get the car sitting perfectly flat you'll need to let the suspension settle over time, and adjust it a few times to get it right, as obviously the car is heavier on one side to the other.

Yep that is a common thing, people forget and it is true when it is full of crud it looks like part of the wishbone spring area and not that visible.

It is not a necessity to cut the bump stop but if you are making full use of lowering the car, like i have  it is a good thing to do.

Never had a problem adjusting spring platform with wheels on, if car is jack up in the air.

I set mine to around 30mm of thread showing at the bottom and around 25-30mm at the front.

OK, so just to clear this up before i go at it again tonight.

The big silver washer goes on the underside of the spring holder and bolts through the hole onto the black coilover spring holder?? (I have no idea what these bits are called)

And the bump stop, Is this the orange bit that slips over the shock absorber? If so how much do i cut out and where about?

Really really sorry for the stupid questions guys, but the car is booked in for timing belt on monday and need it all back together! haha

Ok fitted the rear coilovers last night, Didnt have the correct glue to re glue the bump stops so i will need to get some proper glue to fix that. The car ended up only dropping 10mm so i'll need to jack it up and drop it another 20mm!!

Will probably tackle the front tonight!!

Also when driving around right after they were fitted, i found them a little creeky?? Is this normal? Or will that be the bushes on my new RARB??
