Where to get fitted LSD?

Featured Replies

Hi

Not sure if this is the right subforum but here goes.

I would like to get a Quaife LSD QDF10R fitted on an 1U octavia (gearbox code 02J)

Please can you recommend a place that would be able to fit this as a 1 day job, possibly changing the cluch if there is enough time left?

Should be close to the Medway towns or Maidstone.

Thanks

(and if anybody has got a link to a tutorial as to why this is not a simple job of changing the open diff to a lsd on the front axle (as opposed to having to bolt onto the box, that would be great)

wont be done in a day i doubt buddy

its not a hard job just a fiddly job

HI

Yes , I think it is approx 10 to 12 hours IIRC

But approx £1400 fitted inclusive of VAT

Sarah

I know Westallc had a Quaife diff in his black vRS. Hopefully he'll spot this thread....

As far as I know you need to split the whole box/diff casing, then drill out the rivets fixing the ring gear to the diff, and then get some nice bolts (ARP do a kit I think) and bolt the gear to the new diff and re-fit. Obviously it's a bit more detailed than that, and I'd expect the labour cost to be pretty hefty.

If you're in Kent, then you're not a million miles from Quaife anyway, so maybe they could supply and fit. Give them a ring and ask.

Ah! an explanation i understand

Quaife will supply the parts for £690 and labour for £200 (all ex-vat), which means a little over 1k notes, but require the box to be with them in Sevenoaks for 3 to 5 weeks!

No can do

@westallc; do you happen to know a place with the right tools and know-how?

other posters, thanks for your input. even 12 hours is better than what I have been quoted so far.

Don't mind driving a little if it reduces the time to 2 days max (box to be fitted to daily driver)

Quaife will supply the parts, labour and VAT for £900, but require the box to be with them in Sevenoaks for 3 to 5 weeks!

No can do

What about buying a spare gearbox (there is atleast 1 for sale on here and plenty on ebay), and sending that to Quaife so they can take their time. Then when you get it back, swap it over, and sell your standard gearbox on here or ebay again. If you aim to break even, then jobs a goodun!

You can normally pick up a vRS 02J (code EHA) for about £200.

Quaife do take their time but they are primarily dealing with national motorsport teams so members of the public have to take a back seat unfortunately  One of the other members near here ("Amateurstuntman" from Strood, I don't think he gets on here much anymore) had a Quaife diff fitted and went to Mike at Impossible Performance who swapped in a standard box and sent the original box to Quaife to put the diff in (for almost 2 months I think  ).

There is a VAG specialist at Dunton Green who might be able to do it over a couple of days, or you've got AmD in Thurrock who did have some Quaife diffs for the 02J on display when we were there the other week for a RR day so should be able to supply and fit although going by the price of their remaps etc. they'll be bl**dy expensive.

amd charge the same as awesome .... £ 1400 ( well 1410 ) fitted but takes 3-5 days :wonder:

Are you looking at just sending down a gearbox?

If so I can see about a price for that if you like?

Sarah

give ally @ unit 18 a call top man him and ross did mine

will be alot cheaper than the above company's

Why thank you

If the gearbox was with us and off the car , we would do £220 + VAT for the fitting

Sarah

Just trying to help too :giggle:

sarah how much u lookin at for a 6 speed conversion instead ? maybe another option

just to recap:

OP is looking for an LSD solution, fitted in Kent, 10 miles around Maidstone, budget is £1000

if the vehicule is to be immobilsed, then 2 days max. if a spare box can be fitted to cover the time the work is done, then obviously time is not an issue.

I'll ask around tonight see if there's anywhere local

Hi

Wow , now then

On that IIRC is 2 drive shafts , gearbox

I think Des had that done and did last a while

To be fair I can`t remember all of it

May be worth having a chat to a guy called Sonny down at A.V.I.T http://a-v-i-t.co.uk/default.aspx

He is quite a clever chap , and may be able to help with the fitting of the diff too

Sarah

No joy with the local garages last night they were happy to fit/refit a gearbox but recommended Quaife do the diff install as they're only used to working on OEM diffs and transmissions.

Looks like your best option is as Bodge suggested to buy a spare gearbox and get Quaife to fit the diff to that so they can take their time. Probably goes over your budget though as you'd need to fork out for the gearbox (although could get that back by selling your old gearbox afterwards), plus pay somewhere near you to swap the boxes when the jobs done.

If anyone fancies a six speed box:

like Clive said try unit18, they are very good value.

reason i as askin bout the 6 speed is if it aint too much more ( ov would be with new box ) then maybe another option instead of lsd ... the 6 speeds of the diesels etc will cope with the torque no probs compared to a petrol gearbox .. just a thought

and completly pointless in our cars.....

and will be in no comparison to a lsd 5 speed

just because the 6 speed diesel can take a bit more torque doesnt put it down any different does it ?? lol

lsd = brilliant mod and means useable power

First of all thanks for the good advice and comments and searching etc

I must admit, i was looking for a place to get one fitted because i thing understeer is terrible. Is there another way to sort it? Probably worth another thread.

If i can find a spare box, will get it fitted to cover for the time quaife need to fit the diff to the oem box. How long does it take a professional to drop and swap?

(and if you find a place, still interested)

If you want to sort out the understeer, fit the thickest rear ARB you can (I think the Neuspeed one is about 28mm)

Although then it will oversteer a bit too much

keeping the front planted by letting the rear slide,...hmmm. still, 25mm seems a good compromise, what about the front suspension though?

thinking a thicker FARB would make understeer even more apparent, right?. S3 strut brace helpful or just bling?

Koni FSD, but can't afford to lower as already front eating hump 3 times a day

spacers?

broader tires

rimms?

revised front geometry?

bushes? which ones

throttle remap? as i find it dificult to stabilise speed whilst cornering

Tell, what and how to stop her going wide??? (apart from lifting foot and reducing corner-in speed)

front wheels are khumo on OEM 16'' spider

hence why I thought an ATB diff is the only answer

You only get more understeer if the front ARB is thicker than the rear ARB. As standard they have a 19mm front ARB and no rear ARB so understeer is pretty bad. If you put a 22mm one (say Whitleline for instance) on the rear and then stick a 23mm R32 Golf one on the front then you're back to square one, with it being all understeery again. Ideally you either want 22mm/25mm rear and standard front or if you have the R32 one on the front then the rear needs to be a 25mm or 28mm Eibach or Neuspeed one.

Other than that, better tyres, coilovers etc.

I take it it is an estate if it's got 16" wheels? Have you thought about upgrading them to 17" spiders from a hatchback and see if this helps? Not sure if the contact patch of the tyre would be slightly bigger giving you better front traction?

Are you tracking it? The only time I've had severe understeer on mine (with standard suspension etc) was going into a corner at 65mph on the Nurburgring, it's not something I notice that much on the road in the UK.
