MDI connection for car stereo - worth it?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

This is my first post as, hopefully, I’ll soon be ordering a new Fabia. It has come to the point where I need to decide what options to add and I’m trying to decide if it’s worth getting the MDI connection on the stereo. Does anyone have any experience using it? I’ve read somewhere that you can use a portable hard disk with it which sounds like it might be good, although I’m not sure how that would work with playlists. I have a Creative Zen Vision M player at the moment and I’m not sure if this would work.

One of my reservations is how useful the controls would actually be whilst you were driving. Presumably you wouldn’t want to be scrolling through a massive list of albums whilst driving so would you only change album whilst stationary, in which case you might as well use the MP3 player itself and just connect via AUX?

Also, does anyone know if it’s possible to use any features like random album selection?

Maybe I’d be better spending the money on an iPod with voice control.

Decisions decisions….

I don't know exactly what functions you can control with the MDI, but I would imagine it can be done via the audio controls on the steering wheel whilst you're driving so should be much safer and easier than fiddling about with the player.

AFAIK the MDI also charges the device.

Have gone for the MDI myself from what I understand it allows you to control whatever device e.g. usb or ipod etc from the stereo or wheel controls. As a bonus think it even displays all the song info on the stereo and Maxidot if you have it.

Got it on my car. Well worth it, it is a big improvement over the one I had in my last Fabia. Gives you full access to all of the tracks on the ipod, you can see track names artist etc. Can select by playlist album or artist.

The small shelf below the glovebox works well, just enough out of site to not leave the ipod visible.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like it might be worth it.
