Clutch Replacement using AA breakdown cover

Featured Replies

Just interested to know has anyone put a claim in for a replacement clutch using AA breakdown cover?

Just wanted to know if you could tell the garage to use SMF instead of DMF...or will they only accept a like for like replacement?

i current have full AA cover with breakdown repair....and the clutch slips badly in 3/4/5 gear so it may be on its way out soon

Car is a vRS has done 125k

From reading about the vr6 clutch and g60 flywheel is the kit to use?

Thanks

Not sure the AA works like that? I think you still have to pay for the repairs, they just recover you to the garage or home for free. Dunno.

Yeah VR6 clutch and G60 flywheel is what I have, and it's the nuts. It's the same as the "ECS Stage 1" kit.

Are you running a K04? If you are, it may be worth finding an uprated VR6 clutch kit to go with the G60 fly. Or additionally get a lightened flywheel too if you're feeling flush.

But yeah, you can get all the standard OE hardware for under £200 if you want to. Check out my old thread: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/150787-clutchflywheel-review/page__p__1877641__fromsearch__1entry1877641

I would've thought they will only do something when the clutch actually goes, and as Bodge said they just recover you to the nearest garage that can fit a clutch then you pay for that yourself

If you think it's on its way out then just get together the bits for an SMF job and pay a garage to do it.

I have the additonal AA breakdown cover, they pay upto £500 of repair costs (minus £25 admin fee)

http://www.theaa.com/breakdown-cover/pdfs/breakdown-repair-cover-policy-jan-2010.pdf

I know they will only cover me when the clutch goes, just need to know if i can specifiy what replacement i want..suppose it will depend in garage

im not sure what turbo i am running... I have receipts with the car that say the turbo was changed for a k04 20k ago :S any ideas how i can check?

Cheers for the info Bodge...i did a search and read up on the info you posted :)

Good way of getting around paying the labour charges!

I'd phone the AA and clarify if you are allowed to supply your own parts or if the AA approved garage must supply and fit all the parts.

Yeah but reading above link, all clutch parts covered Other Than worn out friction surfaces.(Page 15)

The garage you have chosen should, with your agreement, assess the repair and agree with you what work is required to repair the defect which led to the breakdown of the nominated vehicle. Once agreed, you should ask the garage to contact the Claims Helpline on your behalf on 0845 604 0042 to provide details of the required repair and obtain confirmation of cover before starting work. If the garage does not contact the Claims Helpline for you then you must do so and the claims advisor will tell you what to do next.

At that time the Claims Department will need:

  • Your details
  • the vehicle make, model and registration number
  • the vehicle’s current mileage
  • costs of the repair, detailing parts and labour charges
  • depending on the nature of the breakdown, the Claims Department may require evidence of the vehicle’s service history (for example invoices) from the start date of your cover, so it is advisable to ensure that this information is readily accessible

.

Just reading the T&C, the repair must be carried out by a VAT registered garage, and excludes modifications and/or alterations to manufacturer’s original specification"

i suppose it boils down to the garage and how they put the claim in...im sure you could tell them what parts to use before they log a claim in on your behalf

A slipping clutch is not a mechanical failure so will not be covered.

trust me i used to do the AA repairs

Hope you paid the extra prumium if your car is over 100k,and that your clutch goes spectacularly,as friction wear is not covered.

Vehicles which can be covered under AA Breakdown Repair Cover:

Cover is available for a vehicle which has been nominated with the Insurer and which is eligible for breakdown assistance cover under Your AA Membership* (Personal or Vehicle Membership) excluding motor caravans, kit cars, taxis, private hire vehicles, any vehicles used for hire or reward, any vehicles used in the provision of courier services and any caravan or other trailers.

Any motorcycle must be a two wheeled motorcycle with an engine capacity of over 50cc.

Except where Multiple Vehicle Cover has been purchased and the relevant Multiple Vehicle Cover premium has been paid, a supplementary premium will be payable for eligible vehicles which are:

a)

10

years or more old when first nominated with the Insurer; and/or

B)

have

100,000 or more recorded miles at that time.

Please note that the year of manufacture, as confirmed by the Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Agency (DVLA), will be used to determine the age of all vehicles

Clutch

All parts are covered other than worn-out friction surfaces

Will be most surprised if the AA pay out as 2 mates at work have tried unsucessfully to claim. One was refused as he could not produce evidence that his car had been serviced to manufacturers spec in the last 12 months

i wouldnt be claiming for a slipping clutch....im talking about a valid claim if the clutch goes Bang (as in undriveable)

Yes i pay extra as the car is over 100,00 (you have to tell them)

I have FULL service history ever since the car was first on the road

Thanks for the reply regardless

the problem you have is when the clutch goes fully when they remove the clutch plate and see it is worn badly causing the failure your claim will not go through and you will have to foot the bill

also if your car is running a non standard turbo then you also may have trouble

Sorry, but you have no chance getting this one through.

Even if the clutch (or some other part) did 'go bang' after weeks/months of slipping, your claim would be rejected as soon as they saw the state of the friction surfaces. It would be obvious that you had not properly maintained the car (replaced the clutch) and waited for it to go bang.
