I've a Passat with one in it, and unless the dipstick is a liar, I've used almost 2L in 3k so far, unsure if the dealer actually serviced the car at all or relied on the stamp in the book which had been done 3k beforehand, I'm going to drop oil and filter change soon, got some Mobil 1 0/40, but I'm a bit worried about the thickness of it, it seems very thin oil, tis 502 and 505 spec, which is supposed to be ok for a 10k interval, way it is at the moment I'm going to go back to the VX 5/30 I used without problems in the Szuperb :->

now i'm panicing :( should'nt be as i'm not going through loads of oil...........................

PD engines seem to vary a lot as to their oil consumption. I think one problem is the factory fill of fully synth oil, which sometimes prevents the rings from bedding. If this doesn't happen within about the first 10k miles - it won't and the engine will then always burn oil. An oil burner will often leak oil from the EGR housing - look out for this if buying used.

The best engines seem to be the ones which have a good thrashing from new and have run to the limit (usually about 18k miles) on the original fill. If the oil is then changed annually/7k miles thereafter, these engines are generally pretty good for a high mileage.

Mine was a Skoda repmobile (M-K registration, as a lot are) which would undoubtedly have been thrashed from new. I bought it at about 20k miles and always change the oil as above. It uses a little oil, but does not need topping up between changes. Do not overfill these engines (dealers please note).

The valve actuating cams are narrow and too highly loaded, the unit injector roller followers less so. Use only the recommended specification of oil - 505.01 or preferably 507.00. There is a lot of hype about oils from people who have not tested them and who should know better - stick to VAG's oil specifications.

only 507 spec oil can be used in the 2.0 with a pdf! don't put the lower spec oil in unless you want to damage the engine. my 2.0 ltr uses about a litre of oil every 10k miles.

A DPF and a pdf are two very different things. I'm happy to receive the odd pdf but I'll never have a DPF.

Hahahaha, I knew what he meant, luckily, well actually on purpose I haven't got a dpf, and you are correct, the 507 is to reduce ash for cars with the nice little earner spuds in the zorst unit fitted, I've a feeling the dealer VW dealer didn't bother dropping the oil, and just handed it over with the previous stamp for history, 24k was the 1st time mine supposedly had a service, I bought at 28k, so it's possible I have the wrong oil in it and it's older than it should be, sticker in the door says LL service was carried out, book after me prompting them to stamp it says fixed service oil used.

So next week when I've figured out how to get to the filter, (it's buried under some pipes on the VW) I think I'll write off whatever was in it and have a new Mann filter and the Mobil 1 supersyn 0/40 will go in, if that burns through I'm back to the VX stuff, I know you don't approve Roto, and it's true the only test is the one I gave it in the Superb, but it would only burn 0.5 L between services, and there was no noise coming from the rocker cover when I sold her @ 102k, and at least 40k of that was on the VX oil, still I think we can 100% agree on one thing, this ****house firm loves to cause confusion with just about everything it labels doesn't it.

well until recently and until oil pump failure at 57000. the last 10,000 miles i used about a litre which i thought was great vw 507

I also have a 2.0ltr tdi superb and it has covered 38k from new and has had 3 services with another due very soon...and the mileage of around 10k between services, i have only topped up oil on the 2nd service which was 23k...and from then on, i havent added a drop of long life oil since.
