Where to buy Engine oil

Featured Replies

I went to German and swedish car parts store today they said they dont sell FUCHS Titan GT1 5-40 Fully syntethic oil no more because theyr having to buy it expensive so the customer has to pay £50 for 5 litres, they recommended carlube engine oil I never bought because its a budget engine oil although it meets the 505.01 spec I would be worried about using it, iv read up Main dealers use FUCHS oil so my idea was to stick with it but for £50 its not worth it.

I want to use quality oil Fully Synthetic or oil thatsbeen engineered and tested for the PD130 Engine, + my car lives on the motorway & to give the the turbo a quality oil can only be good,

Shopped around

Castrol edge is £39.99 delivered from euro car parts, £45 From oppie oils with 1 litre free

Or halfords oil £34.99 (Halfords any good)??

Its not due a service anytime soon but im on the hunt for oil that meets 505.01 5 litres for the service..

Any recommendations where I could get a decent quality oil from or even a bargain :giggle:

Thanks in advance!

i go to vw and get it i pay 20 quid for 5 litres at my local, proper pd quantum oil does the job grand emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

I normally get 4x4litre of PD 505.01 oil for £50. Or 25 litres of Miller oil for £60.

If you want top quality oil I would recommend either Motul VW 505.01 from opie or even better is the Morris lubes 5w40 fully synthetic. It has an excellent VI, good pour point and one of the highest KV ratings. You can buy direct from them.

any decent autofactors emoticon-0148-yes.gif .... millers is quality oil emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Do any of you rate Lucas Oil? it meets the VW Spec 505.01

Costco do 25l for £30 - it's a big black drum and it very clearly says PD505.01 on it. It's either PD505.01 or it isn't. If it is, then it's OK to use, otherwise not. That's what standards are for. What brand it has on it is largely a matter of whose advertising you like best. Many oils exceed PD505.01 but the manufacturer won't pay to have them certified, so they don't carry the certification number.

As has been stated though, any VW garage should sell you 5l of their own brand Quantum oil for something like £25.

do you have the spec on this oil? technical info. I should be able to tell you if it is good quality by looking at the numbers.

There's a lot of oils out there that make 505.01 or 507 but that doesn't mean they a good quality, all it means is that they are fit for purpose.

For example Redline oils do a 5w40 but they use a Polyo Ester(group 5) base stock which means the quality of oil is better than what most other brands such as castrol, miller etc using PAO (Group 4) base oil would do. Redline don't advertise as much as Castrol or the like but it will be a better oil. The founder of redline also used to work for Lubrizol as a chemist so that to me speaks volumes as he has all that experience in blending base oils and additives and what formulations are best to achieve an oil that resists breakdown at high temps and maintains a consistant viscosity from 40 to 100 degrees....sorry i digressed quite a bit on this topic. :giggle:

 The cosco one sounds good for the price, any details on who makes it ? and do they have 507.00 oil ? cheers - Stuart

Sorry I dont know have any more info on this I just saw it in my local motor factors

LUCAS OIL - See the link if it helps?

Trade Part Specialists (aka TPS) dotted around the country, basically VW parts dealers.

£30 for 5 litres of VW 507.00 long life oil (correct for all our engines). I can't remember the brand name. It's either Quantum or Synta. Both are VW used oils anyway.

It's what I use in my Golf R32 and Fabia alike.

I understand what you are saying, but actually, the most extreme stress on any part of the engine is covered by the PD505.01 specification. Yes, you can use something better than you need to, but there is no need to spend £60 on oil which £30 worth of oil does the same job. I change my oil every 10,000 miles (2-3 times a year) and I use Quantum oil from my dealer. It's £5/litre and there is no need to spend more than that.

With the VW 505.01 spec go to every shop/store around you, even E.Bay ( I do) check-out engine oils and compare prices, but your spec noted on side of container.

Brand name not relevant, you pay extra for the luxury of a brand name and make that company lots more money.!!

Cheers, I understand as long as the oil meets the 505.01 that is all whats important I agree, however I know on turbo cars choosing the oil is critical that is why I asked on here, I was under the impression the better brand name of oil the better the quality. Just like many other things in life you get what you pay for, if it was N/A engine I would just use any decent oil.

I.e Castrol Edge oil/Carlube oil Castrol is the better oil in my opinion not because its well branded only because of its reputation? I could be wrong but I just believe using quality oil would save you pennys in the long run as it would protect the engine better, for cold starts in winter, and the extreme heat in summer + castrol has been engineered with vw to meet the requirements so its just peace of mind.

Is Fully synthetic oil a must for the VRS or can we use part-synthetic?

Thanks

I'm going to Costco tomorrow, I'll check it out

None of the oil in Costco is suitable for our engines

Asda living has Mobil 1 ESP which meets 505/507 spec for £30 for 5 litres

Thats a shame, can we use the Mobil 1 ESP 507 in our engines? 507 is for extended service intervals, but the Fabia is on fixed yearly or every 10,000 miles, would using it be okay providing the change is done at 10k?

Yes you can use 507 spec oil for all VAG diesels ( some commercial engines need different spec ) . Spec 507 can be used for fixed servicing or variable servicing . The Mobil oil quoted is also approved for VAG spec 504 which is for petrol cars .

Mobil oil is used for F1 engines.

:giggle: (Mobil oil is used for F1 engines) How fast do you want to drive ? If it meets the spec then its suitable for use in our engines ! and I for one wouldn't want to waste money paying lots more out for a brand name. cheers - Stuart.

Its not about driving fast, if Mobil 1 is used for F1 cars it shows how good the reputation so for those who want the best for their car would probably use it, or maybe those who have remaps or do track days etc

Many owners are not bothered, but I guess if you intend keeping the motor for a while its worth investing in a good oil, it may extend the life of the turbo thats the real reason im willing to put another few pounds in, + if you service the car yourself your saving anyway.

505.01 is a must but Fully synthetic oil is the way to go as it has better protection properties, rather than doing 5k changes 10k would be okay with fully synthetic according to the internet anyway :giggle:

yes defo agree fully synthetic is the way forward.

I'd say 505.01 is better than 5w30. 505.01 doesn't run too thin at high temps and not only that it also tends to hold its Viscosity better and from the specs i've studied it seems to better all around.

5w30 is a bit too generic imo. I'm not saying its a bad oil, i'm just saying you'd be better served by 5w40. And regular oil changes are a good thing as it helps prolong the life of the turbo? Oil breaks down quite quickly and despite the marketting stuff about it holding its viscosity well...this isn't 100% true. Another reason to stick with 5w40 because it is slightly thicker at higher temps.

I disagree, you get what you pay for.

Its not about comparing brands(some people automatically assume Quantum is the best value for money) or prices, but looking at the numbers on the data sheets. Compare a castrol product to the equivalent Quantum and you can immediately see that the Castrol one is a far superior oil.
