Pedals vibrating over rough ground

Featured Replies

Morning all

Just a random question. Has anybody noticed the pedals in their Superb vibrating on occasion when driving over rough ground/drain covers etc? It's quite difficult to explain and only occurs occasionally. My car has done it since new. (it's an auto so just has two pedals, if it makes a difference).

Cheers,

Phil, mine does this, occurs infrequently, mainly the throttle. You are right, it is hard to explain. I do not worry about it.

Mine does it too and is quite disconcerting when you first notice it (V6 TDi auto, if that makes a difference)

On mine it's definitely coming from the front suspension and I can even repeat it if need be for second opinions, nobody has correctly diagnosed it yet (potholes, manhole covers etc at between 20 & 30 mph)

There are numerous posts on Passat forums about it too and no definitive fix has been identified.

I've crawled around the front end and checked all the suspension; link arms, bushes, all fixings tight etc. I even gleaned from elsewhere it may be the anti roll bar bushes - replaced these and it still does it.

In my ownership, just over 12 months, and at 131K my car has sailed through 2 MOTs. I even asked the tester during the last test to be really keen on checking the front suspension components and he found nothing amiss.

It is frustrating but I just drive and avoid the potholes etc at urban speeds. I'm toying with the idea of rebuilding the front end but there's not too much wrong with the car at the mo, plus I have one of the suspension legs with a seized pinch bolt and have no inclination to go through the pain of trying to remove it until I really need to

Guys I had murders with this issue and never got to the bottom of it.

I suspected the boot lid adjustment, the shocks, the exhaust and engine mounts, the air con compressor, the airbox, and the pedals themselves, I gradually worked my way through it all and still didn't find it, it's not the link bars either cos I did them and it still did it.

The two other suspects were cheap brake pads jumping about and transferring to the brake pedal, and the CV joints, I know it sounds weird but mine got better for a while with well greased pads, and a bit better after I replaced the drivers side CV, so the one thing I would say to do, is get some good pads and don't grease them, just put a smear on the outer ones at the top and bottom, this way they should corrode in to a degree, if anyone does crack it let me know, I'd love to know if it was a fault or not, oh and one other test, try it with a full tank of fuel, if it goes away then it's got to be shock/spring related as it's lifted some of the weight off of the front.

Not sure it's pads on mine, they are genuine VAG items and snug in their carriers and no more 'float' than any I've replaced on other cars.

Yeah, I don't think it was that anyway, I think it just had a bit of a placebo effect at the time, I thought I'd cured it adjusting the boot lid, as it's a heavy panel and I'd had new struts and the hinges had been undone at some time previous, sadly though it returned, after reading this I'm glad I didn't spend out on it trying to find it, and Skoda must've known about the issue and that's why I got fobbed off and told they weren't interested at the time.

Thinking along, the one common denominator is the auto gearbox, I wonder if the mount goes soft, of something internal comes loose, or it's simply the shape or weight of the box that causes the car to react like that.

Wonder if the common denominator is the box ?

Are there any manual owners out there with these symptoms ?, or for that fact I wonder if VRSPhil has a V6 TDi, could this be the culprit or even the combination of the two ?

I'm going to be changing the box fluid in the next couple of weeks so when I've got the covers off will have a good poke around the mounts

Hi,

noticed this with a number of cars not just Skoda. My current Yeti has this not only through the pedals but the front foot-well floor as well. Even more noticeable when running on winter tyres.

Think it might be down to the monocoque design of modern cars, with all the suspension bits bolted to the shell.

Ahh right, I thought it was just autos, I did take Chris BP's car out looking for another problem a few years ago, and we deliberately went where mine was doing it and his didn't, his is/was a manual Sup, now this has me thinking, what if it's all down to tyres, if some tyres are able to absorb impacts better, and others can't and then allow the vibe to transfer into the shell.

I've only ever had this problem in the Superb. Over the years I've had Mondeo, Saabs (9000 & 9-5), VW Touareg, Fiat 500c, Pug 205, 405 & 309, Golf & a Touran to name a few and none of these had this type of problem.

I have Continentals on the car (notorious for stiffer side walls) and the car has the factory sports suspension so is probably more prone to transferring the lumps and bumps into the cabin but it's no excuse for this, seemingly, design fault (VRSPhil says his has done it from new so to me it's a design flaw).

If its like a slight pedal shake I some times get this if I hit a big pot hole or something similair. Never really paid much attention to it though. Im running manual V6 TDi

Only way I can think of describing it, which is really random, is if you have been on a bus and its sat idling and the windows are vibrating about, its like that sort of vibration for a second or so.
