Strut bar / brance and bumpers

Featured Replies

(obviously should have been strut brace! Sorry, has been a long, hot day)

Hi all,

Picked up a 2nd Fun today, mainly to strip parts from. Looks like I was beaten to some of the goodies, but there are still a few gems left. (Mainly the little bits that are broken on mine, fogs, switches, headrests, rear seat has burns in it) Looking under the bonnet, I discovered it has a strut bar / brace (whichever you call it). I'm not hugely mechanically minded in this department, so it is worth transfering to my good truck? Is it just a case of unbolt and bolt? What does it actually do? And does it really make a difference?

Also, the bumpers have seen much, much better days (black ductape on a yellow truck), but they are still 95% intact. Is it worth taking them off and rebuilding them? (Quite a dab-hand with fibre-glass repairs) In fact, as I'm planning to scrap the truck anyway, it is worth having the entire plastic trim off, repaired and resprayed?

Cheers.

Yep keep the strut brace certainly. You just undo the 2 nuts each side. All it does is stiffen the car up and helps prevent flexing when you go around corners.

As for the bumpers I am sure fun bumpers in half-decent condition would sell reasonably well on ebay.

yeah i fitted a strut brace to my pickup and it did make it stiffer at the front, when you go to fit it make sure the front wheels are on the ground..

those fun bumpers are like hens teeth so i would deffo keep them..

:wonder: *shameless scrounge mode* :wonder: if you are scrapping it can i have the power steering hoses off it please?

DJay, sadly, no it didn't come with a set of yellows. Only two, and I have plans for those I'm afraid. However, I can recommend this:

The bloke's name is Paul, he's in Spalding, Lincs. I got my Truckman off him last weekend. He's got a full set of 4 yellows, complete with 99.9% new tyres (only done about 1,500 miles). I don't know where you live, I'm from Kent and am in Spalding again this weekend, if that helps.

Cheers

Hi Tom,

I'll keep you in mind. However, I haven't actually driven the truck yet, I fired it up and towed it home with my brother in it, so I haven't had a full and proper look at it yet. For the money that changed hands, I always intended to pick it up and run like hell with it and then sort out what I'm going to do with it. I'll fire it up after work (it's in the works car-park at the moment) and make a decision a bit later. (I also seem to recall someone blowing their 1.6 MPi up in a truck too, so I might have a work there, and have a "stripping day" in a week or two ;) ;) )

Cheers

Worked like a trouper lunchtime:

Took the strut-bar off and fitted it to Truck 1

Front fog lights off (with a bit of encouragement) (There's an abandoned Mk1 Felicia just round the corner from home, thinks I might "borrow" the foglight blanks ;) )

Front bumper off

Discovered that Truck 2 has a roll bar on it. That'll be off next methinks, along with the back bumper.

Also discovered that the Fisher-Price bumpers are stuck on over the original bumpers, so it shouldn't look so shameful with all the body kit removed. :)

Tentatively I'll be arranging for the doner to be collected in the afternoon of 10th July (next saturday) There's a company that will part with money to take it away. (can't complain about that)

So far I've had requests for:

The power steering piping. (Got a Haynes now, so I should be able to find those)

The back wall and the roll-over bar cover.

The lights (front and back clusters)

Already gone:

The Truckman top is on EBay (it's the one with panel sides and no tail-gate glass.

Both bumpers are off and on my garage roof (I'll get round to renovating them a some point - they are in a bad way)

The alloys are gone., along with the spare.

Dashboard switchgear is gone.

I plan to get the side trim off this week.

The strut-brace is on my other truck now :) (noticable difference)

What's left

The 1.6 MPi engine (obviously will be without the piping mentioned above) is still intact, but is fairly smokey. This could be because it's only run for an hour (whilst being towed - for brakes) in the last three years.

The font seats are intact, but very worn

The steering wheel is intact but very worn

Ironically there is only light rust around the rear suspension mountings, so it is possible that the chassis is in fairly good (for it's age) condition.

I'm thinking of opening the car park up on Saturday 10th, so anyone who'd like to come and pick-over the remains can do so. It's currently just outside Redhill in Surrey. Anyone interested?
