Not running like it should

Featured Replies

As the title says the car is running crap. The problem that i've got is that it feels like it losses power for a second then its ok. It mainly happens at about 2800-3000 rpm when i drive normal. No problems when i give it some though. I've replaced the MAF thinking it would be that, but has not made a difference. Has anyone got any idea what it could be? Its a 52 VRS 1.8t with 92.000 on the clock

coil?

Get it logged on a VACOM or diagnostics machine check on this site for anyone local to you that will kindly check for you if needed. ( in tech section)

From that it might though up some codes to check?

Also check the common faults like hesitation thread that may also give you some advise.

Else we are guessing.

Coil pack mentioned are a common problem that can cause intermittant failures

Try cleaning the throttle body and check for any splits in the pipes around the dipstick.

:+1: for the TB clean and check all your pipes.

As per what everyone else has said

Get it fault code scanned

Do the cheap / free fixes like TB clean and checking pipes

Do you have a remap?

Was about to post when I noticed this thread,...... My car has almost the exact same problem, possibly slightly lower in the rev range than the OP has with his, and only really notices in 2nd gear, other than that it drives fine,.....

The car is an '03 Mk I octavia vRS estate, just under 45,000 miles up. I've only just got it, and I'm sure it didn't do this when I test drove, or when I took it home, (Looooong story, but there was over 3 week gap after I drove it to confirming that I was buying it and taking it home) but it sure does now, it only feels like a little 'blip' in the power for half a second or so if that, but annoying none the less,...

The car came from a main dealer (not Skoda) who had taken it in as a P/X, should it get sorted under any sort of warranty? (haven't been back through all the paperwork yet),... Used car minefield, don't have much of a clue TBH,..... If not should it be fairly easy, ie: cheap, to sort, or is it a sign of impending catastrophe?,....

I appreciate that's several questions in my first ever post, but any advice much appreciated,...... Cheers,.....

Hi There welcome to Briskoda.

There is a hints and tips folder on the Octy section that has this link regarding engine splutter that might be a good read to check out.

There are a number of reasons for engine hesitation and running a little lumpy at low revs that are also mentioned above.

- Throttle body dirty

- MAF(Mass air flow meter clogged with dirt on sensor part or faulty)

- Coolant temp sensor

- leaking pipes or split hoses

- DV or N75 value faulty

Also in some cars there is nothing actually wrong it is just a common trait in some 1.8 turbo VAG cars so you could end up replacing or fixing all those items above with no success. Although a number of folks have reduced the issue or eliminated it by sorting one or one of the items listed above.

Also it is probably very unlikely a dealer or garage will support you under warranty for that kind of problem unless they are compassionate, but should not stop you asking, certainly if you believe car was running ok when tested.

First thing to do with the car is get it diagnosed in case there are any error fault codes logged that could point you further into what is the problem

You could ask your garage to do that.

think we've mostly all been down this road at some stage with our RS's.

doing my head in link is good read but you end up doing everything to sort it sometimes to no avail.

mine has done it twice now ! is it running abit jerky/lumpy whilst cold because mines as also started doing it again,it hesitates at spool up time.(26 to3k rpm also runs crap whilst cold)

1st time : it was coolant temp sensor (upgraded to oe. green top one)

2nd time : i found a hole had rubbed through on a rubber breather pipe(thats not mentioned normally) in the divertor/dump valve area (2 rubber pipes with a rubber sleeve holding them together had rubbed a hole through ,which you cannot see without moving the sleeve /easy to get to at the top rear of the engine.

mines just this week started again so ,here we go again as they say

for me it (still) is the coolant temp sensor; you know the 01039 - Coolant Temperature Sensor (G2) one. splutter disappears when engine is hot. I'd say:

1. read the sticky

2. get all errors logged

3. Don't worry too much

I also had similar problem, around 3000rpm car jerked for a second and after that every thing was OK.

Cleaned the throttle body which was btw really dirty (inner side) and no problem any more...

FYI; Adaptation of TB is needed if it`s disconnected...

Thanks for the welcome, and the advice,.....

Having taken some time to have a good read through I now fairly satisfied that what I'm noticing is nothing more than the 'character trait' often seen in VAG cars with this engine,.....

TBH I have a reasonable amount of experience driving Mk I vRS's and hadn't noticed this before, but I guess that as those cars weren't mine the slightly (ahem) more enthusiastic driving style used, (as you do when it's not your own motor or juice,... Right?,.. emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif ,...) didn't show this up,..... Same probably true for the test drive,......

Thanks again,.......

One guess as to what you do for a living ;)
