The Yeti's new Land Rover opposition

Featured Replies

For anyone interested there's a short commentary (which says little in fact) and video on the Autocar website:

Apparently expensive though in 4wd form and the back does rather look as if someone's made a mistake and tried to back the car into a garage with a half-height door.

c. £35k for 2wd... ?

And I've heard of worse names for cars....

Looks nice IMO. And a completely different target market to the Yeti too.

Well they did call it a Range Rover and not a Land Rover! emoticon-0140-rofl.gif Give it five years and I bet you that you won't get Land Rovers anymore and you will ONLY get Range Rovers. Maybe the new Defender will be the only LR left and the Freelander and Disco wall both become Range Rover Freelanders and Range Rover Discovery as well.

Oh it looks VERY nice. I really like it. And it looks pretty much just like the concept. After Land Rover made such a hash of the Range Rover Sport from concept (the Range Stormer) to bloated reality, I was fearing for the LRX too.

As to target market: before options it is £35,000. So yes this is DOUBLE the Yeti's price and not a true competitor at all. Had it been a baby Land Rover sitting below the Freelander it would have been. And could have been but they decided to launch it upmarket alas.

Looking at the video, it's got a very low roof line.

It looks lovely, but for £35k you could buy a Discovery. But then with Victoria Beckham as the brand ambassador I'm not sure I'm in the target demographic!

Me neither - I like pies too much.

I think it looks a lot like the new Kia Sorento; anyone think Kia got an early peek and then rushed out their copy of the design first?? :giggle:

You could, that's true. Doesn't mean you have to though. Only if you need full mud plugging and to carry upto 7. They're appealing to other sectors of the market, who have the same budget to spend but want a different product. You can't knock them for that, so good luck to them.

After all BMW manage to sell X1s, X6s and 5-Series GTs - I've no idea why ANYONE would buy these over a normal Munich offering - but there you go :)

Steve

The SM has MUCH more character :D

It looks very nice actually. Something you don't get too often... a sleek and sexy 4x4. Not really a competitor to the Yeti as it's an upmarket vehicle at an upmarket price. They say the 4 wheel drive version will start at £35,000, that means by the time you've specced a few options, it's going to knock a hole in £40,000, twice the price of a well specced Yeti.

That rear window looks super thin! emoticon-0112-wondering.gif

Wouldn't say no to one though... better start saving up for 2012.

I wonder what the head room is like in the back seats?

Well compared to the Kia it is a better design, but no way is it competion for the Yeti, because of the price.

And why Range Rover and not Land Rover?

Because LR have decided that the RR name should represent quality and fashion, (Victoria Beckham now being a consultant) where as the LR name should be for the everyday, working market!!

I'm sure there is something logical behind it!?!

Well that'll put the kiss of death on it :D

I had plenty of reasons to buy my Yeti before - now this is the most compelling reason NOT to ever buy a Range Rover of any description.

VB being employed to sell these cars just about sums up the way that 'bling motoring' has gone in this country. There again that's why Land/Range Rover have hired her I suppose.

Let's just hope she's not employed to be a consultant on the new Defender... now that would be the "kiss of death"!!!emoticon-0120-doh.gif

I like it a lot and if my budget for my next car is much greater then I would certainly consider one. As others have said though, it is not competing against the Yeti. Good news for British car manufacturing

I like Defenders and the latest Discos. Even Range Rovers. But this thing looks hideous! Is this a case of 'Emporers new clothes' ?

Seriously, I think it looks horrible.

I can see it now - a pure marketing thing for the Jetset. Perfect intro and the follow-up is going to be Paris Hilton promoting the topless version with no off-road bottom protection.

It is about as relevant in today's world as the Hummer and the Batmobile.

I think that about sums it up - plus the eco card - lower emissions etc.

You can buy one of those too... ;)

That was positively UGLY

I suppose it goes against someones taste, but as I see it, they are both fashion statements, not CARS.

I need someting that is fun to drive, practical and has good ecoomy. My Yeti does all of that.

It is difficult to gauge other's reaction to the Yeti when you are driving, but I am on another one of my stints down through Germany. The road warrior Audi's do have a nasty habit of coming up close behind when in heavy traffic - like saying " get outta my way, buddy" - but then they cannot keep up when it clears and you put your foot down. After that, you get a bit more respect, and thety stay nicely behind till I get to my 180 km/hr reasonable limit, and they can then take a run and get past.

Snehvide demonstrated her stated 201 km/hr top speed yesterday - on the on-board instruments. There seemed to be plenty more to go in both 5th and 6th, but alas, both traffic and my feeeling that things happen a little too fast for my old reaction times. 800 km, 8 hours with stops and a ferry, calm ann relaxed at the end - and amaxingly quiet. Tough to beat at the price.
