Felicia 1.3 MPI Temperature gauge reading too low

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Up until yesterday the temperature gauge on my Felicia would fairly quickly go up to the half way point and stay there as long as I was moving, if I got caught in traffic or at a standstill it would gradually make its way up towards the 110 mark and the fan would kick in and keep it at a constant temperature until I got going again.

Yesterday after being at a standstill for a while and the fan kicking in, when I got going the temperature gauge dropped fairly quickly to the 70 degree mark and ever since then it has read much lower than usual. It takes a long time to move off the mark and hovers just under the 70 degree mark most of the time. It is however heating up slightly more when in traffic and cooling when moving.

I'm guessing that the problem is either the temperature sensor, or the thermostat, does anyone have any experience of this, if it was just the sensor, would the gauge be moving at all?

The engine does not seem to be running very smoothly either, but I'd imagine that this would be the case if either had failed as the ECU will think the engine is not warmed up.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I'm not sure whether to try replacing the sensor myself or take it to a mechanic to get the thermostat changed.

Thanks,

Mick

try opening up the thermostat housing and checking the thermostat, sometimes plastic clips break, which causes dodgy temperature readings. easy to replace, there is a mk2 thermostat housing for about £15 which you can get from jorily.com, which is much better than the other type as it uses a circlip. its a very common problem on felicias.

the housing is split in two halfs and secured by three screws. very easy to do yourself. If it is broken, just have a quick look in the other half for any debris that might have got loose before replacing. you may lose a bit of coolant but nothing major

I've recently purchased a complete kit from Skoda for a 1.3 feli. It comes as a temp sensor, thermostat & housing. I bought it for a V reg one that I was repairing for a present for my Neice, she's now not sure if she wants it tho, so I might be selling the kit boxed & unused at a discount? And then breaking the car...............which seems a great shame at 10 yrs old & 69K miles! :(

It sounds a lot like the thermostat has stuck fully open to me as well.

As Skoda Dragons says, you can get a new one from Jorily (find them in the Site Sponsors' section, oh and BTW this site doesn't moderate working hyperlinks).

Thanks for all the help guys.

I ordered a replacement thermostat from Jorily (and temperature sensor just to be sure) and replaced the thermostat today, now everything is back to normal.

It was one of the plastic clips that holds the spring in place that had snapped.

Definitely a job worth doing yourself as a local garage quoted me £130 to replace the thermostat and it only took about half an hour.

Thanks again for all the help.

Garages always charge way too much, i invested in a haynes manual when i bought my first felicia and have used it for everything and did it myself. i only use garages for mots or very complex things that i dont have the tools for. it's saved me loads of ££££ over the last few years

Tr - We don't really want this job, but if you're stupid enough to pay this much for it...

Any garage that doesn't want that sort of work must be mad, surely? I'd do them all day long at that price! Even at half that price, in fact (parts extra...)
