Sticking calliper, twice in a month

Featured Replies

Hi folks

Just a simple one really. I had a terrible burning smell from my passenger side rear wheel arch and traced it to a stuck caliper. Garage sorted it £45 later and all has been well for a couple of weeks. Today I thought the car didn't feel right, handbrake not holding well and feeling loser and again a strong burning smell from that same arch so I'm guessing same problem again.

Now, is there something inherently wrong here for it to happen to the same wheel twice in a month that the garage should be addressing? I don't really want to pay £45 to have it 'unstuck' again but I'm going to have to. I just don't want the same thing occurring 3 weeks later if it can be easily prevented

Any hints gladly taken!

Cheers

If the garage have stripped it down and cleaned it up and it's sticking again, it may be time for a new caliper.

This might turn out to be a case where the garage has not sorted out the handbrake properly (if its not familiar with this set up) and if you are handy with tools, or know someone that is, maybe clean up both sides again, "zero" the pistons on their screws, fit external Sharan lever return springs and then make sure the handbrake is allowed to sort itself out and, if necessary, slacken off the handbrake a bit to let the levers just rest on their end stops. That would be a lot cheaper than replacing the callipers for them to start sticking again in a year or so.

I am assuming that your rear discs are still servicable - thick enough and the swept surface shiny looking on both sides, and all chunky bits of rust removed. If not mayeb replace them while you are at it (calliper mounting bracket needs to be removed).

Assuming they cleaned it properly. Sadly I doubt many garages would put in the time and effort to clean a caliper up properly that a home diy mechanic would.

Hi thanks for all your replies.

Well the discs and pads were only changed 6 months ago, I don't know if the calipers are originals or not. Sadly I'm not handy in that area hence most jobs are done through a garage. Potentially then I could call the garage slightly disgruntled and hope they may look at it at again and rectify it as best as possible.

If it is a new caliper then I guess a must is a must.. best go look at prices!

Cheers
