Exhaust & FMIC

Featured Replies

Ordered myself a copy of Vag Com today, as well as booking the car in to have cruise control fitted (£250 at main dealer), a new dump valve fitted and a remap (both by AMD Surrey). The next step on the tweak agenda is an exhaust and possibly a front mount intercooler. Just wondering if anyone has experience of Miltek or Jetex cat back systems and any suggestions for the fmic. Also is a fmic necessary?

If you go through AWESOMEgti on ebay, it cost £117 to the cruise control retro fitted, that's for the stork/wiring/ECU activated, I know your down Surrey way but you should be able to find it cheaper than £250!

I went for the forge cooler as i decided i wanted something that fitted no hassle and planned for a bit more BHP over just a map and exhaust, fitted perfectly and very easily with no ****ing about unlike the ebay cheaper ones that some people favour.

and £250....thats daylight rape

It is cheaper than the specialists I saw, including PKD and AMD Surrey. It is not just the parts it is fitted and working. I'm being lazy I know I could do it for less if I fitted it myself.

I had a look at the forge site for their intercooler, looks good, but what is the need to change the bumper about? Is there really a need to mod the bumper? Just wondering as I'm planning on getting the bumper repainted to sort out the peppered look of the paint., will also be doing the bonnet to sort that out as well.

For exhausts most people on here either have Milltek or Blueflame, a few have others like Piper etc. or custom made jobs.

For best performance you'll need a complete system from the turbo back rather than just a back box. If you have a look at peoples sigs to see what they've got then have a word with them about performance, noise etc.

With a remap an FMIC is pretty vital, even with a generic remap the SMIC can't cope with the heat and you lose quite a lot of power if you boot it several times in a row. A lot of people have bought ebay FMICs recently but a) there are no RR figures to prove they're any good and b ) they don't always come with the right pipes so are a b*gger to fit.

The Forge one may be expensive but it fits perfectly and works. As for modding the bumper I believe Forge do an exchange on the crash bar, I would seriously consider that as they will cut it and strengthen it where it needs to be strengthened so you don't lose the impact protection. If you cut it yourself and don't strengthen it it's taking a big risk.

I was thinking of getting the forge as I want a quality item. I was just wondering what the bumper mod was so I knew how it would affect the repainting the car will be getting.

Also for the cost of getting the cruise done all the places that are cheaper would work out more expensive once I have traveled there and back due to my location. Even local specialists are more expensive than the main dealer.

The guy I spoke to at AMD Surrey said an fmic wasn't really necessary even after a remap but I feel like playing it safe and getting one. When I have had a new dv fitted a remap done the exhaust and fmic tweaks will be done.

After speaking to a friendly local supplier (who mechanics on race cars and really does know what he is doing) I was informed that anything newer than 2001 will fail an mot if it does not have a type approved cat fitted (law that came in to effect about a year or two ago). Speaking to miltek directly about this they said they were unaware of any mot stations that are/can enforce this currently but that may change. They also have no plans to do a type approved cat for the mk1 vRS so to avoid any future issues I will be going cat back only. The car will also be mapped to run on 95 ron petrol, I'm not interested in chasing power figures. I want a driveable, enjoyable car that I can take touring and not worry about if I can find 97+ ron petrol.

It's up to you re. the bumper, the crash bar sits behind it so nothing to do with the bit you'll be repainting. you can either leave the plastic part standard or you can cut the middle bit out and fill it with a wire mesh as some people on here have done to allow more air to the FMIC. I personally think they look a bit ugly with the middle bit out, as you have to stick the numberplate on a little strip to one side of the bumper.

I take it AMD are doing a custom map if it is going to be run on 95 ron?

. When I have had a new dv fitted a remap done the exhaust and fmic tweaks will be done.

.

If i was you i'd do the remap last otherwise you won't be gaining owt from the last 2 mods

AMD said that if they do all the work they will adjust the map free of charge so it works with the mods  . I was going to go for the map last for that reason until they said this.

The guy said they would adjust the map so it was set for 95 ron, or I could have the normal map and the knock sensor would adjust the map to account for the 95 ron being used. Like I said earlier I'm not bothered about losing a few bhp by runing 95 ron instead of 97+ ron. I will be touring with the car so being able to use 95 ron petrol is more important to me.

Hi,

A guy is selling his Forge FMIC for £450 i think in the sale section, very good price
