Ac and starting

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am looking for a diesel Fabia up to 04.

I have seen a nice one but it has a strange problem. I have searched on here but have not been able to find a relevant post

Model SDI with air con etc. 68000

Started well on first start, excellent drive no dash lights, air con on and working well. Drove for 30 mins.

Stopped engine without switching air con off and it would not turn over compression to start. Started fine with power pack and with air con off, restarted fine on battery. Air con on and it would not crank over compression. Turn air con off and still wont crank over compression. The charge light is lighting and then going off on start.

First thought battery but it should not take so much current to operate the AC clutch that it stops it cranking?

Any thoughts before I buy it. (I suspect they could get it to work fine on the forecourt by charging over night)

First thing I thought of was the battery, especially if it's on a sales forecourt. It will probably have the original battery being a 2004 car so will need a new one soon. O n the other hand the power steering light usually comes on when it has a low battery as well and wont go off until the ignition is turned off and on again. Other problem could be the a/c clutch, this is not a straight forward repair, you can't change the a/c clutch , it will be a complete compressor change and is a common fault with the Fabias. Cost about &700 with re-gassing and labour. Unless the car is cheap, cheap, walk away there are plenty others to look at.

Thanks for that my thoughts exactly thought but nice to have it confirmed. SDI TDI (non PD) Fabias with AC Elec windows and remote CL (what SWMBO wants) are not that easy to find within a reasonable distance of home.

I will keep looking.
