Tyre advice

Featured Replies

I m currently running 17" alloys on my Octavia, tyre size 225/45 R17. Just about to replace two on the front as they have worn on the edges, what are peoples thoughts for a reasonable make? I usually go for mid range and have been looking at Falken and Avon around about £70 each. On talking to someone today, they suggested some cheaper Kumhos. I don't want to go too mad on this as I have just spent a lot of money on a new boiler for the house! So your thoughts and suggestions please. He also suggested going down to 215 instead of 225 but I only want to change two not four!

I have been using Falken F452s for the last few years - no complaints from me, I generally at least 30k from the fronts and double that on the rear on my 110TDI

Totally legal to run narrower tyres at the front, it's only illegal on the back :smirk:

Although it will also mean a different diameter wheel which might look a bit odd unless your car was designed for different sized wheels in the first place. :S

I'd be inclined to go with the best you can afford on the fronts. Over 30k miles of driving a saving of £20 or £30 shouldn't be the primary concern IMHO

I've had Kuhmo KU31s on the rear before and were quite happy with them, but the Falkens seems to be a good compromise between performance and price. My fav tyres remain however the Goodyear F1's, but don't know whether they do the size you need.

Cheers for the advice. My mechanic mate was suggesting replacing all four tyres witth 215's. I don't really want to do that at the moment as the rear ones are in good condition. Will probably get some 225 Falken's for the front then. B)

You can use 205/50/R17 instead of the 225's if you want to. They are the same as what the vrs uses. Compared to the 225/45's, there will be practically no difference in the overall diameter of the wheel.

Not sure why you would though, as the 225's are cheaper cos they're more common.

Thanks rk696. Will stick to 225. A mate was trying to pursuade me otherwise!! I did look up the prices of 215 and they looked slightly more expensive.
