Opinions on 1.9 vs 2.0 TDI PD incl towing

Featured Replies

My partner is considering an Octy eatate we have seen a couple at a local dealer, a 07 1.9 elegance and a 56 2.0 elegance for virtualy the same price.

I have a 12 year old 1.9 tdi that is still behaving itself and I am more than happy with the consumption but finds pulling a 16ft caravan not exactly easy but not struggling.

Over to you, what is your experience with towing and general economy/performance between the 1.9 and 2.0TDI PD ?

Thanks

Chris...

Turbo's more reliable on the 1.9. I think the very low end torque characteristics are nicer on the 1.9.

I can't comment on towing with the 1.9 but I've just started towing a 20ft caravan with the 2l, The 2l is fantastic, nice smooth power delivery, plenty of low down grunt.

We are quite well loaded 2 Adults 2 Children 1 Dog in the car then the caravan holds everything else, on our 1st trip out the caravan weighed in at 900kg's but will get heavier now we know we are 200kgs under the caravans limit :)

Don't be overly concerned about the 6speed gearbox in the 2l as you will only use the 1st 5 when towing.

Our 1st trip over 170miles saw around 26mpg (calculated brim to brim)

My 57 plate octy 1.9 tdi est pulls like a train with my 2 berth van aprox 800 kgs on the back .
