Performance Air Filter

Featured Replies

After looking at a few different types of performance air filters i'm unsure of which 1 to go for.

just wondering which 1 do you use, have you noticed any difference in mpg or performance?

would really appreciate your feedback

Thanks Ryan90VRS

K&N. I have used them for 7+ years on all 3 of my last Skodas (1.3 LXI Felica, Fabia 2.0 8v and Fabia vRS (current) and each and every tme they have improved engine response, power and possible mpg.

I have also never had a problem with them effecting the MAF.

i had a k&n on my fiesta 1.4 zetec petrol. didn't realy do anything but with the fabia been much more powerful i think i would have better results with a performance air filter on this car.

Just about all the VAG diesels pull in more than enough air through the std OE filter - providing it has been changed regularly = max of 10k, not Skoda's recommended intervals.

An after market 'performance' filter will produce more intake noise but no more power gains on a std motor.

What if i was to get a remap?

If and when you go down that road then things may be different, but the std clean filter is capable of filtering much more air than is needed.

from what ive heard on the forum the best thing to do when getting it remaped is to change the air filter to a performance one and also change the air intake to a pd160 trumpet and pipe

I notice in this thread (which is re mapped to "170ish bhp") he said:

I wouldnt bother with PD160 filter - i did and it made no discernable difference... waste of ~£30 in my book.

if its been remapped to 170 bhp then it will need the uprated trumpet etc as they felt it was worthwile doing on the pd160 engines kind of makes sense to do if its at 170 bhp

Yeah i too was wondering which type of filter to go for. Word of mouth by some Golf GTI tuning enthusiasts told me that ITG apprently make the best performance air filters. Had an induction kit on my old Vectra and it sounded great but affected low end torque big time. Im too getting my Octy vRS remapped soon so will also change to a new air filter. Will probs go for K&N panel filter since they have such a reputable reputation....

i've seen a fair few with Pipercross, They sell them at Awesome GTI and they are the easiest to clean with them being foam. Pipercross claims that fitting one can increase performance by upto 5% which is a maximum of 6-7 bhp on a standard Fabia vRS

Don't actually know where i've seen that it increases performance by that much i could be wrong, but K&N say that theirs will give "better throttle response and approximately 1-3HP gained throughout the rev range".

it sounds like theres a lot of mixed views on this subject. I think it is down to personal preference and how far you intend to take the mods as its probably not worth spending on an `performance element if you are likely to look for big gains and need something more suitable further down the line. I will probably go with a k n 57i remap exhaust and upgraded intercooler, but may have to speak to bank manager first,(and wife).

Deffo wouldn't go for a cone filter more trouble than what their worth. Would be a replacement performance or a standard 1 you get when you have it serviced.

just fitted pd160 intake and pipercross filter not noticed a big change but feels like engine breaths easyer but only just done mods so hard to tell at the mo pd160 intakes are like rocking horse **** cost me about 85 quid from seat stealer :( and fitted filter today so only drove it about 2 mile home from work with them both together might take it for a blast tonight if rain stops

cool let us know how you get on with it like i said earlier only really need it when you've had a remap

ok will do not getting remap for a bit yet so should be able to tell if just a filter and pd160 intake help

I have a PiperX panel filter and I believe it delivers better mpg (1-3) more over std filter, plus I am sure this it gives better response ?? not sure on performance though. I thought this was the same with my previous Octy (2L PD + remap). This is my opinion anyway!

yeah think you could be rite with the better response going on what i've read

its psychological...

stick to oem filters and change at least ev 10k..

Its really not Warwick :D

Not that I can comment on the effect vs OEM on My current (vRS) and last (2.0 8v) Fabia as I never ran them with the OEM one - just a K&N one BUT I did feel a deffinate difference when I changed over to a K&N one (from OEM) in my first car - a 1.3 LXI Felica. I remember the day well.. it was raining and the roads were quite wet and I remember that before I fitted it I couldn't get wheel spin in 2nd gear (P6000 165/60/r13) when pulling off a roundabout etc but after I fitted the K&N it was wheel spin galore (in 2nd) if I wasn't careful! It deffo made a difference to the BHP/torque/engine breathing and to the day I have swore by them and always made sure the car I drove had one in!

On the plus point for the OEM filter have a look at the pipework for the clean side of a car run on an OEM paper filter vs the clean side of one with a "performance filter".

My pipe work on the clean side of my K&N is always pretty much spotless.

Right while i'm on this topic. I have just bought myself a new air filter from ripspeed. I know, i know it's probably not that great and it wont make any noticable difference to my car, just like the sound to be fair. I got it for dirt cheap too.

I have a skoda fabia 1.2, 2003 htp 64bhp. I have taken off the plastic cover which is actually got the panel air filter within it, and looked at the inlet. It's very very small compared to other cars of similar power. I cannot find a reducer the size to fit over my inlet..

Is it true i have to get one made up to fit snug around my inlet?
