Coilovers

Featured Replies

Getting coilovers soon as my suspension is shot and it will work out cheaper than buying new OEM springs and dampers, can anyone recommend what sort of drop to go for? I only want it slightly lower than standard, not so low that the wheels are in the arches and sump banging on the floor...

may be worth looking into shocks and springs, i'm on 40mm gmax springs with PI shocks and it rides like oem over bumps, more progressive in corners, and sits at a sociable height! cost me £250 for the lot, will be changing to coilies soon as i want to slam it....

mine's on weitec gt's and thats the joy with coilovers you can adjust to suit, i like the slammed look but our lass will be driving it more than me so i will have to raise it slightly :giggle: . the ride is firmer but not enough to shake your teeth out.

Too late to go for matched springs and dampers as I've ordered the coilies already  I've driven a few VRS's with Weitecs and didn't find them that much more uncomfortable than standard (Des's had KW3's which are even harsher but didn't feel too bad) so I'm happy to go with coilies. My mate had his lowered 35mm I think it was while we were at the Ring but then it settled over the next few months and ended up too low, it was rubbing on the arches on full lock, so I don't want to go that low

at the moment mine have 1 thread left at the rear and 5 at the front and the arches just sit on top of the tyre, there is plenty of scope to go lower as there is'nt any rubbing, but its personal preference and as said you can adjust to suit

they always settle a bit anyway, but are easy to wind up and correct, so you decided to get them in the end. good choice

Yeah I thought it'd be best. AmD are doing the fitting, setup and alignment for £100, couldn't miss a bargain like that. Probably going to get a RARB too but I'll fit that myself.

Totally wiped out my Ring funds for this year though

Will be doing Simons autowindows and going for a curry next week if you want yours done too come along

thats cheap, how comes they are doing it for that??

yes arb is a def must as you know!

yes that would be cool, where you guys going?

let me know!

what brand of coliovers did you go for? You'll have to give an opinion on them when all fitted.

Blimmey , on my weitecs I have 30mm between bottom of thread and bottom spring platform on the fronts, and not too sure on the rears.

Approx lowering was 30mm

They said the Weitecs are so popular at the moment they are doing an ongoing offer for the fitting etc. Not like AmD to do anything so cheap!

Still got to pay £450 for the coilovers and £38 for the top mounts though :'(

Going to Green Spice in Green Street Green I think - text Simon as he has got to decide what night and get it off work

Weitecs. I'll let you know what they're like once fitted, as said I've driven a few VRS's with them fitted and they felt and handled pretty good but they'd had RARBs, bushes etc done too whereas these will be going onto a pretty much standard car.

Got any pics? Sounds about the right sort of height I want to go for

Here are a few but will post some more up tonight as they are on my home PC.

You can see the height i raised the weitecs to.

Cool that first pic looks about right, top of the wheels level with the lip of the arch (although yours are 18" RS4s )

So that is with the spring seat about half way down the threads?

Same as me then. All the rest of my suspension is totally standard.

I've replaced all of the front end suspension with new OE stuff (wishbones inc. bushes, BJ's, droplinks, ARB bushes, top mounts, strut bearings etc.). The rear only needed new bump stops. So the Weitecs are the only non-standard suspension parts on her.

It's nice. Massive handling improvement, and ride is fine still, but obviously firmer with less overall travel. I do a lot of motorway miles, and drove to Austria and back for skiing over the winter in it. I didn't ever think "oww my spine is crippled, I need softer suspension"! It was fine and I didn't even think about it.

I won't be fitting any poly bushes to my car. I think the vibrations and harshness would irritate me with the miles I do. I also like the idea that the consumable rubber bushes are absorbing any sudden impacts, and not transferring the forces directly into the car. Personal preference though. Some people bum poly bushes. I bum rubber bushes!

The only things I have left to do to the suspension are replace the worn rear beam bushes, and fit a RARB. Then that's it.

My ride height is probably a touch higher than Bowders. Never scrapes or makes any noises. Obviously if you slam it, it will look great, but drive crap! The suspension geometry will go to crap and it'll be a nightmare.

I fitted mine with the rear spring platforms wound up so they were flush with the threaded towers (full thread overlap, but at top). Then adjusted the fronts to be very slightly higher. After a month or two of driving I took it into Janspeed's workshop so I could measure and adjust the heights accurately. I didn't touch the rears, and they remained pefectly level at a sensible height so I was happy. I dropped the front a few turns, and the front stuts needed to be at different heights to get the car perfectly level. One side is heavier.

I'd say get new strut top bearings, inner nuts, top nuts and rear bump stops in addition to the top mounts you're already getting. I also got a complete replacement set of bolts, but you don't have to do that.

Enjoy!

P.S. I'll try and get a pic up later.

Thanks Bodge. I thought the bump stops were included with the rear dampers when you buy Weitecs? AmD didn't mention them... so how much am I looking at for a pair of those?

As far as other suspension bits go I will probably just do RARB on mine although "if" (...more likely "when") the wishbone bushes go I would probably replace the whole wishbones with TT ones with the bushes already fitted just coz they're supposed to last longer than the Skoda ones.

no weitecs come with front bumpstops but not rear, rears are cheap, may be worth buying new, they do need cutting down a bit if you are going low otherwise the car 'bumps' on them too early. Dont think this will be an issue for you as you are not planning on going too low.

+1 for the tt bushes, had them for quite some time in mine much better than the OEM ones and the powerflex ones

Agree  Weitecs don't come with the rear bump stop. I cut mine 25mm shorter.

Here is a few recent pics of mine.

Loving it. Drop looks a little bit more in those pictures though!

I'd like one of those rear diffusers. Not sure about the big spoiler though!

The drop is around the same if not a tad higher than the first pics as i remember raising it to stop the rear tyres scrubbing when car fully loaded and driving over some dodgy roads around local area.

The car will drop slightly after you fit the coilovers as it beds in so remember that (approx 5mm)

Spolier not everyones taste, which is cool but i like it and that what counts.

Takes at little while to get used to it, then it grows on you. Also depends if you what the standard look on your car which mine has moved away from quite some time back now.

I would certainly get replacement nuts and bolts when changing the suspension. I can post the p/n's if needed

I'm hoping they'll replace the nuts and bolts, they said straight off they would replace the top mounts and I need to have a word with them about replacing the rear bump stops. P/N's would be handy although I think they have all the OEM parts in stock already, it's just the coilovers themselves they are ordering in.

not sure they will do nots for the price they quoted, alot of places reuse. Think you need to ask them specifically to do them.
