horn problem

Featured Replies

just took the front grill off the check the horn because it wasn't working. the fuse was ok because it's shared with the hazard lights and they are ok.

anyway, i found that the spade connector was not attached to the horn terminal. so i just reconnected it and it worked, put the grill back on went for a drive checked the light etc.

went to use my indicators and instead the horn sounded??? lol

i think it's probably just the stak as been removed or replaced and not put back properly. if anyone has any other idea i would be very grateful.

i thought i had fixed another problem but i've just made it worse!!!!

help!!!!

You can quite easily remove and disassemble the indicator/horn push stalk (you can see all the contacts inside and check they operate correctly). I am guessing the problem lays inside there. There are two electrical connectors which simply pull off. I suppose it is possible the two have been replaced incorrectly - although I am sure the indicators wouldn't have worked before, and headlight full beam and flash wouldn't work either.

The bottom steering column cover is one screw and unclip/slide off. Can't quite remember how the top cover comes off. The stalk is held with one or two screws then just pulls forwards.

i think i had to replace the indicator stalk omy first favorit, but that was over 4 years ago. and i had a similar proble. so i'm hoping it will something simple.

the horn positive wire ran straight from the cars wiring loom, so i doubt anything has been messed about with too much.

i also have a haynes manual to hand, which will help.

the other weird thing is that the washer stalk look damaged on the front, as though someone's been hacking at it with a knife. i can only guess that may be a reason why the indicator stalk was replaced.

thanks again anewman for your help.

quick update to the horn problem.

i removed the lower steering column cover and found that someone had soldered the wires to the stalk connector!!

and the slightest movement makes the indicators, horn and headlights, sidelights operate. not had a proper look yet but looks like a bodge job. with just a mass os solder shorting out all the connections.

at least it mmight be an easy fix.

not sure why the horn was disconnected becuase of that?

anyway hope ot try and sort it out in the next few days.

removed the indicator stalk and it look like there has been a power surge of some kinf. the plastic connector has melted onto the stalk body and the copper form the stalk contacts is completey gone.

just need a new one with a connector and should be ok.

thanks
