FSI Engine Details & Longevity?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

As I mentioned in another thread, my parents are looking at getting an Octavia to replace their current car. Looking at what's on AutoTrader (as a guide) in the local area and in their budget, they're looking at either a 1.6 FSI, 2.0 FSI, or 1.9 TDi (the 1.4/1.8 TSI's just aren't around, and they don't want an 1.4 MPI).

Looking at it, some of the petrols have fairly high mileage - 60,000-80,000 miles on a 5 year-old. So, I was wondering what the longevity of the 1.6/2.0 FSI petrols engines was generally thought to be? I know people say petrols don't last as long as diesels, but my parents' cars (both 2.0 Vauxhalls) have over 190,000 miles on them and haven't had a problem, although I know there's a lot more to go wrong on modern engines, so I'm just not sure if that kind of mileage is asking for problems..? I guess at that rate of mileage it'll be motorway miles, so that might not be too bad ...

Do either of these FSI engines have any known issues?

As the diesel's the next iteration of the engine in my Fabia, I think that should be good for 200,000 miles if looked after correctly, just like mine?

Also, one of those advertised locally is a "Sport" - does anyone know what was fitted to this as standard? Obviously, I'm hoping it doesn't have funny seats, etc. I think on the Fabia Sport they just lowered it slightly, and tinted the rear glass..?

Finally, does anyone know what the economy of the 2.0 FSI was? As it's not a current model, rather unhelpfully, it's not on Skoda's website.

Thanks! :)

Try this for the figures on the second hand Octavias.

Afraid I can't help specifically on the petrol engines, but one of my colleagues had a Passat with this engine and when he sold it with 170K on the clock it had been ok...

That's good info - thanks! :)

Can't help with the 2.0FSI, but my 1.6FSI averages around 42mpg (according to the computer) with a mix of motorway/urban driving. Considerably more economical than my previous car which was a 1.6 Nissan.

Another advantage of the 1.6FSI is that it has a cam chain rather than a belt, so no expensive replacement required after 4 years or whatever the recommended mileage is.

Don't know about other longevity matters yet as the car only has 33K on it - hoping it will equal or better the same Nissan which had done 156K (with no engine issues at all) when I sold it.

I've got the 1.6 in my Octavia. Only 29k, but no issues. Driving like a granny, I have seen over 50mpg on a run, but over 45 mpg nearly all the rest of the time.

That's not bad. :) From the link the previous poster gave, the 2.0FSI seems to have a stated MPG of about 39 (IIRC).

Ah, didn't know that - thanks :)

That certainly did well! :) If this one gets anywhere near my parents' current car's mileage (193,000), I'm sure they'll be delighted with it! :)

Crikey! That's nearly what I get on my diesel Fabia (56mpg around town without traffic, about 48-52mpg with traffic)! :)
