A few niggles

Featured Replies

Hi all

After owning a Fabia VRS for 3 years, I decided to jump ship and get an Octavia, have to say very impressed with it bar a few niggles that im sure you guys can help with :)

1) Car seems to be affected by wind on motorway quite allot (more than the fabia) Is this normal or is there something wrong? It feels like the car sort of sways beneath me (not too bad, just feels like a really bad cross wind) But this can happen even if the wind isnt that strong, any ideas??

2) There is a lumpy/hesitation feeling when driving in town between 1,700 - 3,000 rpm, feels like the car is shaking, again not violently but noticable

3) The clutch is high but never slips, but it makes a noise when pulling away like a rubbing noise, made better if more revs are used and non existant if I really concentrate to balance the clutch and throttle (basically its hard to make a smooth getaway and going from 1st to second). I can also sometimes here a spring noise when applying the clutch (i guess this is the clutch mechanism, but should I be able to hear it? (only noticable when windows are open and no surrounding noises)

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

1) this is normal, mine does it on the duel carriageway on the way to and from work. Unfortunately the Octavia does suffer a lot in sidewinds!

2) clean your throttle body if the car is a high miler and it's never been done before. Also if it's been remapped or modified it can be a trait of the remap. Or a split hose.

3) DMF might be on its way out, you will know if it gets worse because it will make a noise, and I quote another member "like a midget trying to hammer his way out of hell"

1) The ARB's fitted as standard are pony-poo, and the car will rock if you look @ it wrong. Uprate them and the wind-roll issue will be greatly reduced.

2) Throttle body sounds a good starting point; quite easy to do. You will need VAG-COM software and lead to re-align the throttle body:

Hi, Thanks for the quick response Mr Eyebrow

1) Thats good, was hoping that was the case. Just antisipated the Octy to be really flat and "rock like", but its actually quite a rolly comfortable ride, but if its normal thats fine.

2) Car is on 108k ish but has a very good service history, and was last serviced prior to me buying it in June. I believe the TB was cleaned by the previous owner within the last year, he gave me the can of cleanier so I could re-do I supose, is it a hard job? Not rermapped, which hoses would be most likely to give this effect, is it a DIY job to change them?

3) Not really a knocking noise yet, more a "rub". Will keep an eye out for the noisy midgets :D

Your help is appreciated, cheers

Sounds like the TB shouldn't need cleaning then. Garages don't do it as part of normal servicing but it sounds like the previous owner has done it once or twice. You can undo the jubliee clip on the big hose to the throttle housing and have a look inside to check how dirty it is, although it can get dirtier on the inside and you won't really see that unless you take the TB off.

There are unfortunately quite a lot of hoses that can split. The main culprits are the Y-shaped hose and the pipe it is connected to on the front right hand end of the engine (take the engine cover off), also various small hoses under the inlet manifold which you need to remove the plate in front of the dipstick to get to.

2) does sound like TB. Could be a faulty N75 I guess?

Hi Guys

Thanks, looks like I will try the TB again just to eliminate this, then check hoses. With the hoses if there is a split is it ovious or can it be a tiny hole you cant see?

Sorry for all the questions

Oh and just to clarify

The shaking/jerkiness happens on constant throttle/revs not only as i accelerate, not sure if this makes a difference??

Thanks
