Where does the law stand on the old style registration plates:

Is it illegal to fit them to a car which isnt pre 1973 or whatever the date is?

basically those plates and many of the other "show" or custom plates are illegal , altering the spacing or altering the letters is also illegal.

Not only can you be stopped and get a fixed penalty notice the car should not pass the mot either

Plus the police have the power to effectively confiscate the registration number which could be unpleasant if you have paid for it
